Nuts are awesome with beer. Chips and salsa is probably my next favorite.

I think if we're drinking, taking a Tylenol while drinking isn't the worst of our liver problems anyways
If I'm not mistaken, the last time I looked at a bottle of Tylenol, one of the warnings was not to take any if you planned to imbibe two or more alcoholic drinks. Tylenol is metabolized in the liver, ibuprofen in the kidneys. It's much easier to do damage to your liver with acetaminophen than to do damage to your kidneys with ibuprofen. I haven't taken acetaminophen in years.

What's your take on Garrett Oliver's book, The Brewmaster's Table? I do understand your point, I do like to enjoy beer by itself, and I often do (just tried Dirtwolf last night for the first time- why was I waiting so long?), but he claims you're missing out by not experiencing the right combination of food and beer together.

I for one find the opposite. Beer always fills me up, sometimes just as much as food does.

I respect Garrett, as well as the Brooklyn Brewery brand. That said, I can't recall too many other brewers telling me that their beer tastes "best" with a ham sandwich. Conversely, I can't imagine hearing a Michelin-rated chef pontificate that his latest dish would only taste good when consuming an Imperial Stout. A work of art should stand by itself. Understand that my response is tongue in cheek, but I really prefer to let the beer shine on its own. Some people are into pairings; I'm into the singular experience. I say this knowing that I don't know more or less than any self-professed beer geek. I just know that I really enjoy good beer.

Ahh the drunchies, unfortunately yes I can say for me they are a real thing.

When I'm in for a session of drinking I try to plan out a snacking plan that isn't too unhealthy. Of course if it's an occasion I'll let loose a little more.

I've also noticed much of it is mental. If you tell yourself what you're drinking is basically liquid bread it seems to help with the hunger. Water also helps and I'd recommend it to stay hydrated anyway.

but what about complimenting your palate with great beer/food pairings? seems to me that you're missing out on an awesome byproduct of beer's amazing versatility

Understood. I like to do both. I'm also studying for my cicerone test, and part of it involves being able to pair food and beer correctly.

That's not just a casual warning, acetaminophen (paracetamol in the UK) and alcohol should never be taken together, in any amount. It can take several years to many decades of drinking to give yourself cirrhosis through alcohol consumption alone for example, and that's heavy drinking every night. It can be done in only months, or even weeks, when you combine even moderate drinking and the recommended dosage of acetaminophen.
Acetaminophen is the single biggest cause of acute liver failure in the US and the UK, not alcohol.
Even people who are regular light drinkers (3 drinks or less) and taking a couple Tylenols here and there can seriously damage their livers in only a couple nights.
    http://www.michigandaily.com/content/fda-says-tylenol-and-alcohol-bad-mix

You know why that warning you're referring to is on the bottle? Because of this lawsuit:

    http://www.nytimes.com/1994/10/21/us/liver-patient-wins-suit-against-maker-of-tylenol.html

That's how dangerous the combination is. Johnson and Johnson, one of the richest drug companies in the world, lost that lawsuit so easily because the evidence of the danger of the combination was so damning. This isn't one of those stupid combination warning you're used to seeing or hearing (don't operate heavy machinery, etc.) or any of the endless barrage of ridiculous "possible" side effects you see in every drug commercial on TV (may cause you to gain weight, may cause you to get skinny, may cause heart problems, may cause your penis to fall off, may cause you penis to spontaneously reattach itself, etc.) this one is actually serious and it's one every drinker, even casual ones, should know because of how ubiquitous acetaminophen is in the world of OTC drugs and how innocuous most assume it is because of that fact.

Depends on the beer. If its been a night of stouts, usually not. IPA's and lighter, yes.

Although its really really hard to top knocking back pitchers of cheap Bud or Coors at the bar with a cheese pizza. Pizza and beer is God's way of saying "hey, take a load off and enjoy yourself for a little while."

There's a bar in Cambridge I used to live like 10 feet from that gave you a large pizza for $2 with the purchase of a pitcher of coors. And they had Keno! And a jukebox!

edit: and yes, stick with ibuprofen and stay away from the Tylenol.

Agreed. Here is how Tylenol (acetaminophen) is metabolized: At normal therapeutic dosages, primarily hepatic metabolism to sulfate and glucuronide conjugates, while a small amount is metabolized by CYP2E1 to a highly reactive intermediate, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), which is conjugated rapidly with glutathione and inactivated to nontoxic cysteine and mercapturic acid conjugates. At toxic doses (as little as 4 g daily) glutathione conjugation becomes insufficient to meet the metabolic demand causing an increase in NAPQI concentrations, which may cause hepatic cell necrosis. Oral administration is subject to first pass metabolism.

Ethanol (beer or otherwise), depletes glutathione, which means that the toxic metabolite NAPQI sticks around for longer in the body.

Aspirin is metabolized: Hydrolyzed to salicylate (active) by esterases in GI mucosa, red blood cells, synovial fluid, and blood; metabolism of salicylate occurs primarily by hepatic conjugation; metabolic pathways are saturable

Ibuprofen is metabolized hepatically. Aspirin and ibuprofen do not have the toxic NAPQI metabolite in their metabolism cascade.

Basically do not take Tylenol (acetaminophen) while drinking. Tylenol (acetaminophen) and ibuprofen/aspirin have different metabolism pathways and are not the same medication.Aspirin and ibuprofen come with other risks with alcohol as well, and you should consult your doctor with questions/concerns.
