I had a case and in the last year I've traded them all, all for what others on here consider whales.

Michigan is flush in quality breweries as well.

Personally, I found Kbs to be really good.

How aboot Bull and Bush Royal Oil? I don't see a lot of reviews for it but it is highly regarded. I got a bottle from Aaron just for hooking him up with some BCBS in Casper.

I agree with you on both counts. However, I still think that the hype is a bit out of whack, as are the ratings/reviews for it on this site. I very much enjoy KBS and most of the beers that I've had from Founders, so I'm certainly not trying to pick on them. It just strikes me that Colorado beers are reviewed a bit lower than I would expect, and many of the out-of-state offerings are often reviewed a bit higher than I would expect. That may have more to do with my own homerism or expectations created by trades, but it's something that I've noticed.

KBS is a great beer, but I was hyped up for it I guess so it was kind of a let down.... Founder's Imperial Stout may be one of the best beers on the planet though!

Houston got some BA Ten Fidy and released it on Black Friday.

I think Royal Oil and Liquid Brain are definitely approaching that category. Had Bull and Bush decided to just release a few cases of Royal Oil, it obviously would be, but instead they gave us a plentiful amount! I hope they do the same when they release Liquid Brain at the end of the year...

I think we have been in the same quality level as many of the highly sought-after stuff, but Coloradans are just a little more laid back about reviewing and hyping stuff. Maybe we're more chill, maybe it's the weed, who knows. Royal Oil and Liquid Brain are hidden gems for sure. And BA Yeti doesn't perhaps get the credit it deserves due to the price I think? I still think Oak Aged Yeti is amazing (esp on draft!) but it's so readily available and affordable that it could never be a whale. BA Tenfidy was superb. Heck even CK Snowed In was a fantastic little number (and I love the art).

I think they brewed too much Royal Oil and Liquid Brain for "whale" status...and I consider that a good thing. Like @Dan_K mentions, they're more along the lines of hidden gems. The Minister wants to make sure people are able to buy these without doing dumb things to get 'em. That said, I'll take 'em both over most real whales.

I love CK Snowed In. I found BA Yeti to be a bit messy on draft (too boozy) and generally prefer oak aged and espresso to it - you're absolutely correct that both of those beers are awesome. BA Ten Fidy is definitely awesome, but OB continues to alienate me with their pricing structure and releases (the continued ploys of "Oh look we found another case sitting around in the back...today this costs $14").

That was rather odd. First day it was $10.50. Second day it was $12. Third day it was $13. I believe it did go up to $14 eventually as well.

I think we bought ours at either $10.50 or $12, both of which I would consider reasonable for a stovepipe of that quality. For some reason the fact that they raised and re-raised the price annoys me more than if they had overpriced it to begin with.

Makes me wonder if OB's new venture capital overlords were running some sort pricing experiment as they prep for wider production. Or maybe they were just fucking with people. Either way, kind of annoying.

I'm curious about this statement? Those are pre pasteurization correct?

The pre 2010 cork and caged bottles are not pasteurized. I haven't had one, but I've heard a lot of mixed reviews regarding how well it's held up. Some liked it, others got a lot of off flavors in it. Whether that speaks to infection/lack of pasteurization or simply the presence of off flavors in the first place + oxidation I can't really say.

I'm not a huge La Folie fan as it is, and I don't have a particularly strong connection to NB. Given all that, I probably wouldn't want to give up what it would take to land one of those.

Me either. I know some folks are way ISO of though. I was just wondering if you had experience with them to see how they taste.
