KBS is a great beer, but you have to remember that when it was all the rage there weren't as many excellent BA stouts as we have now.

I view it kind of similar to Pliny, still great, a classic for the style, but a lot of other beers have "caught up" so to speak

They poured a keg of '09 La Folie at Falling Rock this Saturday. Some people really liked it, but I don't know if that helps answer the specific question of how its drinking from the bottle.

The corked La Folies are what got me into sour beers 10 or 12 years ago. The last one I had was a few years back (consumed in 2013 I think) and it had few years on it. It has been too long for a comparison to the capped bottles, but I seem to recall the corked bottles having more variability in flavors (which is good and bad, I guess) and more funk to them. I'd be somewhat suspect of a corked bottle now unless I knew that it had been stored in perfect condition.

Great thread. I've lived here for a few months now and was wondering the same thing.

That being said, we seem to get a LOT of out-of-state stouts and out-of-state beers.

Thus far the two rarest things i've gotten here (and I wasn't looking):
-Xocoveza Charred Extra Anejo - keeping that one
-Bruery - Fourth Meal - drank it 1 week after buying (and it had just hit the shelves, was gone in 24 hours) - and it possibly the best Belgian Style beer I've ever had, extremely balanced.

Yes, I know those are both from Cali, but Goddamn.

    Runner up:
-BA Prairie Bomb - not rare at all out here, but absolutely delicious and im aging my last bottle of it.

I see Fourth Meal everywhere. Hazels and Boulder liquor Mart probably both have a few cases of it right now. I was just there and they had two full rows of it on display.

As always, the definition of "whale" varies from person to person.
Some people consider it anything they can't buy off the shelf.
Others have access to Cantillon one offs and the like.

I tend to think something needs to garner at least a "wow - good luck" in the trade community to count.

I am personally done with the hunt for super special beers. I retired the day I stood in the cold for an hour for a couple bottles of bcbs. In Fort Collins there is great beer on the shelf at all times. As someone who has had a number of whales over the years, I have found for myself its not worth the trouble. The only thing I do now is go to my favorite liquor store at the time when they get their monthly allotment of Pliny.

Yeah, Fourth Meal is collecting dust at my liquor store - it's a decent buy. They also have a row deep of BA Prairie Bomb. Not sure that we exactly have any 'whales' from Colorado...not that I can think of anyway.

Its tough to have whales, being a landlocked state and all.

But seriously C&C La Folie, Persica B1, Casey Leaner and Seasons Past.

NB used to bring fully branded bottles of Le Terroir to GABF in the mid 2000's. AFAIK that beer was never packaged for sale until they started the Lips of Faith Series. I bet one those would probably garner some attention.

Actually, I was just listing beers @DenverBeerDrinker might have multiples of.
