Glassware does make a difference, but it's a slight one. A great beer will still taste great in a shaker pint, so I don't sweat it. I own a couple of nice speacialty beer glasses that I use myself, but if I'm at a bar or a friend's house and they have shaker pints at best, I'm not going to complain.

Glassware is far overrated. Certainly a proper glass is preferable, but good beer will be good no matter the vessel and bad beer will be bad.

The same holds for bourbon, scotch, etc.

All the above posts nailed it.

I did a tasting with a friend of mine - we split a 750ml bottle and did two pours into a snifter and two pours into a pint glass. Both of us agreed => the nose differed between the two but the flavor was pretty much similar. Color will definitely be affected based on the shape of the glass, other than that? My humble opinion, being old school, a long time guitar player, and a long time craft drinker ... I relate to this like guitars. Every electric guitar player needs a Les Paul and a Strat - everything else is a hybrid and between the two, in a stripped down sense, you can pretty much cover all of your bases. (You Tele players may argue that :stuck_out_tongue:!) I relate that to beer glasses as well - a pint glass and a tulip and you can cover your bases. Ideal? Maybe and maybe not based on your personal preferences. But, I'm guilty as charged; my glassware collection is at a stupid number right now :flushed: and I could whittle that down (if I had to), to pretty much a tulip and a pint glass. On the other hand ... don't touch any of my guitars!!!! :grimacing: ( Oh, the irony! :grinning: !! )

Proper glassware is nice but yes, it is overrated.

...short answer no. Long answer NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I'll admit the taste component of proper glassware is definitely minimal and most people who say they can taste the difference cannot. That being said it's important to note that glassware and the appearance of beer is part of the appeal, would you approve of a glass of wine being served in a shaker pint? no you fucking wouldn't, beer is a beverage made by those who are committed to the craft of making it, respect them and don't treat it like stale fucking water, it doesn't often taste better because of a glass I'll admit that, but it does look better and that is part of it. presentation enhances food, it's not a stretch to assume it enhances beer.

Can't abide chalices, rather effete and used only to be given to the ladies.

If you don't mind a marginal loss in aroma intensity and head retention then: No.

I always try to review with correct glassware, however if I cannot manage it then it's no huge loss. I'm not going to punch the bartender in the face or anything like that.

Most of the time at home when I'm simply having a drink (not reviewing) my go to lately is a 500ml Stein, it has a handle for when I've had too many

Of course the glass won't make the beer taste different, but one may give off the aromas more than another. I recently had a Porter in SA's perfect pint glass and later that night out of the bottle. It was much better from the glass due to the aroma, which plays a big part for me I'm finding out more and more.

When I was stationed down here a very long time ago every bar used Mason Jars or you drank it as they slid it across the bar. I never felt deprived, and I doubt it makes a difference, although I have some nice glassware that I love. I use them too, but I drink IPAs out of a Pils glass if I feel like it. If the beers good it's all good.

What you're learning is that the aromas are critical to the quality of flavors you experience. Some estimates from the pros who study this stuff (e.g., food scientists, etc.) place the contribution of the aromas as determining about 75% of the flavor you experience. They are critical to most all of us.

IMO, there's not a nickel's worth of difference in aroma between a Pilsener glass, an "official" IPA glass, and a proper Imperial Pint glass. Nothing wrong with the fun of using the correct glasswear, and it does affect the presentation of the beer; just not the aroma or taste. Tulip-shaped glasswear does affect the aroma concentration a bit, though, but for me, it is just not that big a deal.

But you see it does make a difference. The aromas are critical to the experience of flavor.

Try drinking a beer when your nose is stopped up or pinch your nostrils closed while drinking a beer and I'm betting you'll find lots of difference to the flavors you get.

Bottle, can, plastic cup... I'll drink it out of anything, but a nice curvy weizen glass shows off the range of colors in a wheat beer way better than a shaker pint, and a teku really does make the aroma pop more than any other glass I've used, including tulips and snifters. It doesn't matter, but there is a difference.

The only thing I don't like is when glassware isn't rinsed properly and it still has that soap/cleaner smell to it. I've had that not only happen in sports bars, but supposed beer bars that charge $10 or more for a 10oz pour. Not cool.

I hear you, but I actually do prefer to drink my beers like Heady out of the can. Any aromatic gain IMO is lost mixed and exposed to the oxygen that duffeses it, I can sniff the top of the can. I can't prove that it's just my opinion.

I think it's for aethstetics more than anything, which is fine. A great looking beer in a cool glass is a thing of beauty. I've never noticed much difference in the taste when I use proper glassware or not. Personally, I usually just grab the closest pint glass and call it good.

What experience do you value.. if you enjoy a beer regardless of what you drink it out of then then it doesn't matter...

If senses of sight and smell are important to you then you may want to get some glasses.

You don't need to buy hundreds of them by the way.. you could easily get away with 3 to 5.. In fact many of the branded breweries glasswares that are sold use the same shape, you don't have to over think it... although it is another good way to support a favorite brewery
