i think the point he's getting at in (4) is similar / the same as my point above.

there's a fundamental difference between "locals for locals" ie "i just want to try different things in other regions and spread around my local goodness," trades and trading heady topper: it's easy to get, but a) it's not easy to get enough of it, and b) it's not that easy to get.

the impression i get from cali people is that this is the exact same situation as pliny the elder. sure, if you want fresh pliny, you can get it, but have to make sure to pay attention to what stores are stocking, and if you really want to drink fresh pliny all week, chances are you won't be able to make that happen without a decent amount more effort than most beer staples people might buy.

for HT, you probably have to drive into VT (easy, but time consuming) since it's not bursting with population to begin with, and you have to keep track of which stores have it or pencil in a trip to the alchemist within a day of canning.

none of this is particularly harder to do than to drive to the store and buy any old local six pack. but it's a little more annoying than that, and also the beer is so much better than any old six pack that might you want to sate your own appetite for it before you start reaching out for random locals (and unless you go to the brewery and buy a case, you're probably not getting sated). factor in that actual budget limitations plus (likely a bigger deal) sticker shock both contribute to you not getting your full heady fix, so you'll, again, be unlikely to think to trade it for just any locals.

    ---

none of this means "heady is so valuable, people ought to trade hard to get beer for it!" i certainly wouldn't trade something i can't buy again for HT. it just means that most people are demotivated to trade HT for random locals, and not just (or even primarily) by greedy idiots shooting for the moon on the ISO:FT forum. if you (any you reading this) want to trade for heady and can't wait for them to double production, you need to understand this.

    ---

to put it all another way, if what you're offering isn't getting it done, you need to offer more. none of the justification matters to that; it's just there to explain why you need to offer more. arguing people down will not work, because either 1) they're trying to exploit you, so how do you expect to argue them into a fair deal? see how stupid they'd be in that situation... and 2) the factors (such as the HT factors listed above) actually exist and won't be argued away. they don't exist as argument in the first place; they're an explanation as to why one wouldn't bother to trade heady for locals. if i had HT, you wanted it, i referred to this giant post, and you said, "you're being unreasonable," i'd say "great, have fun looking for the 'reasonable' person. i'll be drinking the HT."

    ---

    epilogue:

tl;dr: random locals for locals is an expensive way to drink beer, but you get cool extras and try random shit you wouldn't have found otherwise. for most people, even if that's enough to incentivize doing locals for locals trades (for me it is), it's not enough incentive to overcome the mild amount of added hassle + difficulty in sating one's own appetite for HT to do HT for random locals.

there probably needs to be an extra incentive. maybe not a huge one, maybe just "my friend has been raving about your local beer, XYZ. i want to try it, so i'll send you some heady for it," but probably a bigger one than "you can get heady all the time, you must give it to me for whatever i think is good that i can buy every day." the easiest is to find similar situation beers (zombie dust, pliny, etc) and trade those.

    ---

    afterward:

also, there are people that straight up will trade heady for random locals. if you insist on trading with them only because it's just too much trouble to offer a bit more for heady topper, you either need to 1) be their regular trading partners to begin with, since that's probably the main reason they just give heady away, or 2) simply wait for them to respond to "FT: locals ISO: heady," which will probably happen eventually (again, especially since HT production is going up).

I must be the exception too. I have traded cases of ZD for rarer bottles. Some people may want a case for a party or something and are willing to give up something they have had a few times before for the quantity they can get.

You do realize he was referring to YOUR post history right? Fact is you can get quantity in other ways. It's a great beer sure, but doesn't command many of the beers your asking for.

I was almost sure he was. Oddly i never said I scored those beers before though so I wonder how he came up with me stating that I score a BT or BCBVS before cause I never have.

I actually thought he was trying to be humorous with his ISO with that FT HT offer.... but I guess he wasn't.... That saddens me, in addition to the fact that my sarcasm was lost, and Pahn wrote out his unabridged "memoirs of a HT"

Well, his FT offer must be "Heady Topper Lost" then!

Maybe is just me if it was the thread i read he is offering a case for one beer. Yes a rare beer but i didn't think it was out of line offering quantity like that for a rare beer, it's not like he's offering a case of bud light. Plus someone would have to agree to it. I'd do it probably if i had it and had multiples. Trading is about helping people out sometimes too you know. It shouldn't always be about how much you can get for something
