Does "rare" equal "must try" for you?

So I was recently at the Bell's Brewery release event at Barcade here in Brooklyn and they had Bell's Black Note on tap. Apparently this was the only bar in NYC that had this on tap. And judging by some comments here on BA, this is a very rare release.

I'm not much of a stout fan, and I'm not a bourbon aged fan, so I know I probably wouldn't like this beer. Yet part of me wanted to try it just to say I tried it. But then part of me was saying "why drink a beer you probably won't like? Leave it for those who truly enjoy it." I didn't end up trying it.

As someone studying for my Cicerone, I feel I need to try it all, but trying it all means spending a lot more money.

    Your thoughts?

I need to try all extremely good beers, black note is one of my favorites, it just happens to be rare

I would not go out of my way to try a "rare" beer in a style I do not like, but if the opportunity to easily try a rare beer punches me in the face, I wouldn't ignore it like you did.

Then again I enjoy most styles and props to you for not ordering something rare if you really didn't expect to enjoy or finish it.

Unless I see it on the shelf the answer is no. It also has to fit my wallet and not to mention another thread but it also has to fit my habit of having a beer every day. Price is a relative thing if I am only going to buy this beer once to say that I tried it. If I am going to drink it frequently . . . well that's a bit different and price does concern me there. So rare = expenisve or hard to get?

No. But couldn't you have just had an ounce of it, just to try? Might've even been free. You never know if you like something until you try it.

Yeah it was the bourbon aged part of the equation that stopped me for ordering it. It was just a stout, then I most likely would have given it a try.

    Wait rare doesn't mean good?

    If it's a style/brewery that I like then I'll make the effort. Otherwise I won't.

I remember when i had black note for the first time and fell in love with it. I found out after the fact that it was rare (thats a horrible feeling when you fall in love with a beer)

With that being said i don't think Rare=Good. If a rare beer was being tapped where i already was yes i would probably get one simply out of curiosity but just because a rare beer is going to be released in my area i wouldn't go out of my way to try it if it was a style i didn't care about (smoked stouts for example)

*As someone studying for Cicerone though i would have said try it if its within your means to try it.

I would say rare = hard to get. Pricing can always vary, but availability can be concrete.

Yes if it is rare I will seek after it. I have some barley wine cellaring even though I do not like the style what so ever.

There are a few beer bars near me that offer tasters, so I would likely try it if a taster was an option. But limited beers don't entice me that much when they aren't my style, which is why I'm totally fine being inundated by cases of Hopslam and Nugget Nectar without feeling the urge to buy a pack.

The only beers that are must try's for me are ones that look good and I can buy at the store without much fuss.

If it is on the shelf or on tap and I happen to be there and either my girl is with me or a fellow BA then I go for it. I don't really seek them out.

If a beer that is considered excellent within its style were available for me I would definitely try it even if I am not the biggest fan of the style. If the price is not ridiculous, I have no idea why I would choose not to drink it because it is “rare”. If it is there, it is there. Some local beers for me are “rare” for others, I have no issue drinking them. Not like I need to pay a lot of money or hunt them or anything. You could have asked for a small taster of it.

Rarity in and of itself won't make me drink a beer. Now, there are certain beers, like Black Note, that I really would like to try.

I used to say yes to this question. Now a wiser... or less dumb me says no if the price is too high.

Interestingly, I've yet to find a style I don't like to some degree, except for the American Adjunct Lager style, so I would say that the question only somewhat applies to me. That being said - I care more about how well a beer is rated by my peers and by people on the internet than I do about how "rare" it is.

I've come to the conclusion that many easy to get beers, like Sixpoint Hi-Res, are just as good or better than the "rare" beers, such as Hill Farmsteads Double Citra or Pliny the Elder.

Of course, I have to admit that I will often try a beer simply because I haven't had it before, rare or not.

"Must try?" No. "Would like to try but won't go out of my way for?" Probably. I'm not a fan of overly hoppy / bitter beers, but if I had the opportunity to try Pliny or Heady Topper, I would. But, I wouldn't overpay for the privilege or go out of my way.

But, rare / hard for me to find does add to my interest level. Much more so if it is in styles that I enjoy (Westy 12? Would love to try that!)

I would drink black note because it is a great beer...not because it is "rare"
