So i brewed a 5 gal extract pale ale on Sunday afternoon and i have not seen any visible action in my airlock in the form of bubbling. I cracked it open this morning to see what was going on under the hood. I think what i'm looking at is hop sediment and the yeast in active fermentation (its rehydrated us-05 ale yeast). Can anyone help ID this? Its in a cool brewing insulated bag so the temps been btwn 68-72 since sunday. Thoughts?

Man if only my airlock could talk to me and tell me that so i didn't have to worry. Would it make sense to take a reading in a few days to be sure?

If there isn't a good seal on the bucket lid, the air will escape through there instead. As for the gravity reading, I wouldn't bother until at least 10-11 days in.

Seal it as best you can. Hammers can help with bucket lids rims. Seriously. Then leave it alone for another week before opening to take a reading.

This is why I like to use carboys for primary fermentation.

Because you like to clean off all that gunk through a < 2" opening? : )
