I find when I am trying new beers, I NEVER go for an amber or red ale. Maybe something Imperial like the Tongue Buckler or Imperial Red from Lagunitas. But it seems like amber ales, while flavorful and mostly balanced, just don't really pop for me.

What do you guys think? Perhaps it's the inner california-hop-head speaking.

Alaskan Amber, although considered an Alt Bier by BA, is pretty darn good

hoppy red yes! amber like fat tire no. I love a hoppy red ale, epic imperial red, lagunitas, summit horizon red, steel toe rain maker double red, surly furious(originally intended to be red)

no not really...kinda weird sometimes as they can vary greatly on hoppiness or malt. But sometimes I just get them for the heck of it. Levitation is pretty good...oh and Off-the Rails is a very hoppy imperial red if you wanna try it out but its only in SoCal.

Abita Amber is a decent every day kind of beer and is great with crawfish.

Marble Brewery, a local place in New Mexico. Brews up an awesome Red Ale hopped with Crystal, Cascade, and Simcoe, it's out of this world tasty. They also brew an amazing Imperial Red Ale, which really is just an Imperial version of their standard Red.

Yes. Yes I does. Bell's Amber and Lakefront Fixed Gear are probably tops in my book, discounting "Ambers" that are practically IPAs like CCB Tocobaga.

edit: Can't forget about Stone Levitation.

Aspen Brewing in Aspen Colorado has an exceptional red. I got to try an oak aged firkin of the red and it was awesome!

Northcoast Red Seal is called an amber by the brewery and Dale's Pale Ale being an attempted clone originally are some nice ambers.

Oh yeah their IPA is delicious as well. Honestly they don't really make a bad beer at all. They've also expanded distro to Colorado and bought a canning line, so hopefully they'll be expanding some more.

I don't make a beeline for the style when I'm looking for something new, no, yet I've had lots and lots of Mayflower's Spring Hop Ale this season. On paper the style seems kind of neither here nor there so hooray that the drinking's often better than the reading.
