I think Bell's Amber is spectacular. Really nice malt balance with the fruity hops/yeast esters. I dig it. It's a subtler beer for sure, but very well crafted.

I like "normal" American amber ales like Red Seal, as well as, like yemenmocha pointed out, their foreign cousins such as Altbier and Best Bitter/ESB. That's to say nothing of the "imperial" and/or hoppy reds like Cascazilla that can be great too but are kind of a different animal.

It is true, though, that a lot of American breweries, especially earlier in the craft era, produced amber ales that were kind of generic and not very interesting.

I was going to say, "Eh," and then I saw this post that I cannot like enough.. Totally forgot Speakeasy Prohibition was an amber. I love this beer.

I pretty much never buy Amber Ales. Nugget Nectar is great but I hardly even think of it as an amber. None of the ones I have tried really made a great impression. I will continue to put them in mix-a-six packs but it is rare that I buy a 6 pack.

Unless it's Nugget Nectar, no, not really.

Having said that, I really want to try Lagunitas Imperial Red out.

I drank a lot of NN as usual this year and we are going to have to agree to disagree.

I did too. Disagree. : o). That's the beauty of brewers pushing the envelope, they open up the door for dispute.

A restaurant near me has a bunch of $2 beers during happy hour and I almost always find myself drinking Stone Levitation, I love that beer. Might be the most flavorful session ale out there.
