Probably been said but I believe you meant "free rein" not "free range".
Also I love all dogs, other peoples included. If they aren't barking or jumping on people I don't see a problem. If anything it would boil down to the owners being good and responsible dog owners.
I don't want every place I visit looking like a dog park but a few pups running around outside while I sip a brew? I'm more than ok with that.

Edit: Ok I was in the mindset OP was talking about an open air bar or brewery or something.. Dogs should only be allowed inside if the establishment is indoor/outdoor or along those lines. I'm imaging the hell of a bar where every seat is taken and everyone in said seats has a dog, it would be a nightmare to try and get a drink at the bar. Also if the place is a restaurant then outside only. I already find enough pet hair in my food.

I'm a huge dog guy, but I wouldn't bring my dog to the bar with me. If it's a working dog obviously, but I'd agree leave your pets home when hitting the bar.

So your requirement is I go downtown and get a sheet of paper and a vest to take my dog out with me? That's a bit silly don't you think? In most places it is just that easy to register a dog as a service dog.
Also everyone knows dogs aren't people but there is nothing wrong with someone treating there dog like a child or kid. In fact most people who treat dogs this way are fabulous owners who's dogs are better than most kids. I would never dress my dog up (I don't have one anyway) but they need to be taken care of and raised just like children only their intelligence quits going up after a year and you don't have to pay for their college.
Sure many owners leave the dog at home all day and never even train it not to bark or jump on people, however I doubt these are the people bringing their pets out in public.
    Cheers.

Here's a situation: I part-time house-sit and dog walk. I've got a few regulars, and I take referrals. Often, I'll be house/pet sitting one place, and have to walk another dog. I don't just take the dogs out for 20 minutes around the neighborhood, we go for a couple hours, at least. So, I'll take the dog I'm sitting with me to walk the other dog. We walk the neighborhoods and trails around town, and I'll do my daily errands in the process. And, after a couple hours, those dogs are ready for a nice cool dish of water, and, well, I might have a slight thirst as well. We stop one of the bar/breweries, the dogs get water, socialization, and rest, I get a couple pints, and the chance to chat up attractive female type humans who come over to say hi to the dogs. Everyone wins. Hell, even the squirrels get exercise getting chased around the park!

Yep - dead-on about Asheville. I love the place, live about an hour and a half away. That being said - the crowds are reaching a nearly unbearable level. And don't even get me started on hotel rates downtown!!!

I agree and disagree with @Mantooth.

Dogs are fine, but it does seem crazy when there are as many as there are people. (I'm looking at you Triple C). And also, if your going to bring your dog out, it should be well kept. Fullsteam makes some dang good beers, but honestly, the first thing that pops into my mind when I see their awesome logo or hear their name mentioned isn't how refreshing a cackalacky is after some taxing yard work, it is "WET DOG". This is due to how many stank'n ass dogs were in their bar the last time I was there.

And I bet Eastwood wore sandals when he lucked into a life-guarding gig at Ford Ord instead of going to Korea.

Haha this reminds me of this impractical jokers episode.

Not shown in the clip one guy had to repeat the kid going up to a person with a dog and saying, " Oh, cute dog, what kind is he?"
    Owner says, "He's a _____"
Kid says, "Wow, I bet he tastes good!"

Dogs are cool and all, but why the hell would a dog owner want to deal with their dog while their out with friends in a cramped bar? I'd constantly be worried that my dog was in the way, had to pee, might nip if someone stepped on him, etc etc. Seems like a horrible idea catering to the worst narcissists...

Being the owner of 4 cats, I want to see a cat-friendly bar.

I want more pairs of mammalian eyes silently judging me as I drink beer besides my wife's eyes.

Full disclosure - me and Mrs. O and Little O are BIG-TIME dog people, probably to a fault.

But owning a dog comes with a lot of responsibilities, and one of the the primary responsibilities IMHO is keeping your dog "under control" when out in public. If you're in a dog park, letting your dog wander around off the leash is perfectly understandable, but allowing a dog to wander around a bar isn't acceptable under any circumstances, again IMHO. I absolutely LOVE dogs, but I wouldn't want a dog approaching me off a leash at a bar. Keep your dog on the leash and at your side.

This time of year lots of dogs are shedding. Who wants a dog-hair floating in their beer?

A couple months ago I was at a brewery and had to step over a couple dogs lying on the floor in the crowded taproom, while dodging people's chairs, while carrying some full glasses back to my table. A taproom shouldn't be like an obstacle course.

Most good dog owners wouldn't look at it as "dealing with their dog" but more as getting to spend more time with their dog that they love while also getting them out of the house and hanging out with their other (people) friends.
Most peoples dogs are one of their friends, ever heard the phrase mans best friend?
I hope you don't have a dog that you have to "deal with". If so he or she would probably be happier with a better owner who didn't "deal with" them but cared for them....

I think it's illegal to bring non-service animals into indoor bars here. Even if it wasn't I would never even consider taking my dog to a bar, that would just be inappropriate.
