I got my first "real" haul last night. All my previous buys have been variety packs and ipa's I can get at my store. Well last night I picked up a 4pk 90min, and foothills people's porter, founders breakfast, dogfish 61, sn celebration , dogfish burton baton I believe it's called, and Brooklyn black choc. So far I've tried people's porter and loved it. I've loved the 60min and the sweetwater ipa, but the 90 min seems real boozy. Idk if its just lack of palate development or if it was how it was served. I put in a big wine glass after I let the bottle sit for about 15 mins. It's not that it's bad I finished it and I like the change of pace from the other ipa's I've had but is it always this boozy tasting ?

Its a 9% mother of a DIPA. The hops hide it pretty well, but it''ll still linger around. I think it blends well with the big malt and earthy hop flavor.

Dogfish 60 and Sweetwater IPA are only around 6% while the 90 is 9%, so you're definitely going to notice a difference in alcohol. I'd bet most of the things you've bought have been in the 4-7% range, so I'd say give it some time. You'll know when you're in a mood for a lighter IPA vs something heavier like the 90 Minute.

Yeah I figured that was probably the case.

Everyone will notice something different to a different extent. Palates are never identical, no matter how long you've been drinking beer. I personally did not feel there was a palatable higher alcohol presence in the 90 min. IPA, but there are other beers I've had that tasted boozy to me and not to many others. I'd just chalk it up to your personal impression....but still keep in mind that your impressions will likely change as time goes on and as you try more beers. Whether those impressions are aligned with those of other beer drinkers or not...who can really say. You'll likely be a bit more aligned in my experience, but you'll also still pick up on things that others don't, and vice versa. One of the things that makes beer great!

tastes like sugar to me. DFH has yet to win me over with their beers, especially their IPAs.

I just now opened my very first ever DFH Burton Baton and was rather impressed.

I've been drinking the 60 Minute since DFH started up. If everyone stops to think, DFH was way ahead with the ramped up IPAs. 90 is too sweet for me, but it's a good beer for sure. I don't drink beer like port, I like to drink "beer" and 60 Minute is awesome to fill that bill. Not my favorite IPA, but a regular and a nostalgic favorite. 90 makes the uninitiated drunk.

Never understood the love for 90 Minute as a top level DIPA. Really borders on strong ale category with a huge malt bill. For 9% the alcohol is not hidden well (especially the case on cask--big booze bomb).

A warning: if 90 Minute is too much for you, you'll have some issues with Burton Baton. The latter is superior IMHO. Go into it ready for a big thick Old Ale, rather than an IPA.

I agree 90 minute is not very good. 60 minute is okay, and 61 is by far the worst "beer" I have ever tasted.

One I always get surprised with when I try it again is the Raison D'Tere

If you think the 90 minute is boozy, you should avoid the Burton Baton; it's pretty heavy. You should send it to me, just to be safe.

BTW, nice haul for a first time. Celebration is solid; 61 minute isn't all that common; not everyone gets FBS. I personally love 90 minute, and Burton Baton is heavenly.

many years ago i had some 60 minutes, thought they were great( i was told so, it had to be true). then tried some 90 minutes, and could barley get through the 4 pack. fast forward 1 year. seemed better, but too malty, was looking for a hoppier west coast dipa, said i wouldn't get anymore 90 minutes, 1 year later, tried some 90 minute again, thought it was fantastic. it's not my go to dipa, but if you know what to expect, it can be a very satisfying brew.
moral of the boring story, your taste will change, evolve, also, expectations and mood and environment play factors in your experience.

Yeah mood definitely makes a difference. There's some occasions I only want an ipa. 4 weeks ago I didn't even like ipa's

Nice haul it has been quite a while since I have had 90 and BB, I kind of strayed from the sweeter DIPA's and look for the hop bombs. This is not to be confused as disliking them though, both are phenomenal brews I especially love the oak in BB. Sixty one Is my favorite though, I love the citrus and grape combo.

Burton Baton is the mix of 90 Minute and an Oak Aged Old Ale, the base beer of which I don't think they have released as a separate beer. Could be wrong though.
