Dogfish Founder Sam Calagione Announces New Six-Episode Web Series With Complex’s First We Feast

MILTON, DE (October 12, 2015)— From the brand that redefined craft beer and a James Beard award-winning website comes a new web series that explores the art and oddities of experimental brewing at its weirdest. Titled “That’s Odd, Let’s Drink It”, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery founder and president Sam Calagione teams up with Complex’s First We Feast to produce a six-episode series featuring the fearless brewmaster and a series of celebrity beer enthusiasts. From restaurateur Mario Batali to sports star Chris Bosh, Calagione and guests take brewing to the next level.

With the first episode launching on Wednesday, October 28th on First We Feast, each episode features Calagione teaming up with a special guest who is at the forefront of his respective field to debut an experimental beer. Collaborating with celebrity chef Mario Batali, NBA player Chris Bosh, world-class DJ Z-Trip, actors Ken Marino & Joe Lo Truglio and rap star Mac Miller, Calagione pushes his improvisational beer-making skills to the extreme.

Drawing on his two decades of experience creating Dogfish’s “off-centered” beers, Calagione has utilized everything from moon rocks to Delaware scrapple to produce new and game-changing brews. While the series will definitely appeal to the craft beer-lover, it also highlights the connection between food, music, sports, and art – interests that are often shared and enjoyed over a glass of great beer.

"As a brewer I have always loved exploring the outer-limits of what a beer can be. This exploration makes us better at everything we do at Dogfish,” Calagione says. “You've probably heard that old adage that every person has at least be one good novel in them. I believe in something more provocative and delicious than that. I believe every person has at least one great beer in them. They just need a fearless brewer like me to coax it out of them. I am stoked this show lets me do just that with some of the most creative and talented people in the world."

With the first five guests announced, Dogfish and First We Feast will reveal the final guest in the coming weeks. Please watch the official trailer here and the episode guide is listed below:

    Mario Batali
Inspired by the wastED movement to reduce food waste in America, the legendary chef meets Sam in Chicago to create an exclusive Eataly ale that utilizes bruised fruit, overripe tomatoes, and other produce that isn’t sold to customers, but is still perfect for brewing. Sam then tests their socially conscious experiment on the unsuspecting public in NYC. Beer for good!

    Chris Bosh
When you're making beer with a 6'11" NBA All-Star, you've got to go big or go home. Utilizing a state-of-the-art PicoBrew Zymatic homebrewing system, Sam and Chris brew inside a stretch Hummer while driving around Los Angeles looking for ingredients inspired by Chris' love of Texas BBQ and his globe-trotting off-season adventures. With a little help from Kevin Bludso of Bludso's BBQ, they discover the magic of a pitmaster-to-brewmaster alley-oop.

    Z-Trip
Its craft-beer, remixed, when world-class DJ and producer Z-Trip heads to Dogfish Head headquarters in Milton, Delaware to make a crazywitbier cranked to 11 with some of his favorite culinary ingredients. After Sam shows off his freestyle beer-making skills, Z returns the favor by debuting a brand-new track for a very special audience at the brewery…

Ken Mario & Joe Lo Truglio
Sam meets up with his old college buddies—who now happen to be famous Hollywood actors starring in shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Wet Hot American Summer—for a palate-crushing IPA tasting featuring one insanely hoppy beer. As they battle the intense bitterness, the guys attempt to film an improvised commercial for this extra-crazy beer.

    Mac Miller
Though he's just 23 years old, Mac Miller is an old soul and a seasoned hip-hop veteran. As the rap star celebrates his first major-label release, GO:OD AM, Sam meets him in New York City to share a special whiskey-infused brew that's built to age well—like a great album. With the 12%-ABV ale acting as a truth serum, Mac offers some brutally honest (and hilarious) feedback on Sam's craft-beer rap group, The Pain Relievaz.

    Dogfish Head Craft Brewery Co.
Dogfish Head is the first American craft brewery to focus on culinary-inspired beer recipes outside traditional beer styles and it has done so since the day it opened with the motto. “off-centered ales for off-centered people.” Since 1995, Dogfish has redefined craft beer and the way people think about beer by brewing beer with unique ingredients. Today, Dogfish is among the fastest-growing breweries in the country and has won numerous awards throughout the years. Dogfish Head has grown into a 200+ person company with a restaurant/brewery/distillery in Rehoboth Beach, a beer-themed inn on the harbor in Lewes and a production brewery in Milton, Delaware, selling beer in 31 states.

    First We Feast
Launched in 2013 as part of the Complex Media Network, First We Feast rapidly emerged as one of the most distinctive voices in food with its rare blend of thought-provoking storytelling and irreverent pop-culture sensibilities, reaching more than a million people each month. The website won the James Beard Foundation’s “Best Group Food Blog” award in its first year of eligibility and was nominated again in 2015. Led by EIC Chris Schonberger, its crack of editors and writers has tackled topics ranging from the serious (the dearth of black chefs in today’s kitchens) to the salacious (the secret lives of L.A’s bottle-service girls) and absurd (a profile of Drake’s coconut dealer).

He plays a funny everything. If you ever watch The State, he's the best on that show.

Will definitely be catching some episodes of this. Pretty stoked that it'll be available for free online viewing (at least that's what I assume).

Word. Ken Marino was my roommate when I first started home brewing in nyc in 1993 while he was in the State - that whole group was at our apartment when I shared the first batch I ever brewed. They encouraged me to to follow my dream and open dogfish - they even "borrowed" an MTV van and took it to Delaware to help me paint our brewpub two weeks before it opened in 1995. I shared the above post with Ken and he cannot deny he IS a funny DICK. The pain relievaz - probably the finest beer-geek hip-hop band of our generation (also the only one) - get a bunch of time in the Mac Miller episode of That's odd...Let's drink it. Mac's new album GO:OD AM is so so good. We have had a blast shooting this series with a lot of the same production peeps we did the brewmasters show with - we are bringing some of the beers from the series to EBF next year. Our goal with the show is to turn more adventurous and curious folks on to the wide world of craft beer - a little beer education stuff in each episode and lot's of fun collaborating with some great peeps.

Sure they are going more for the masses and shining a light on the efforts of wastED, but of course, I'd like to geek out a bit more about the actual beer. Maybe a slight bit more on the process, and a maybe a bit more on the actual results.

That nitpicking aside, was a good little distraction, and I am sure I will watch all the episodes.

Texas BBQ Imperial Stout... sounds really delicious (though, I'm not sure I would have added Turmeric).
