was prepping last night to put together a 5 gal round mash tun. prior to even starting i managed to bump a wrench off the table into the cooler which was on the floor, resulting in a small but definitive gouge in the lining. i understand if i introduce grain it may become a breeding ground for microbes. could it potentially have use as a hlt if water is the only thing to touch the inside, or is it a complete lost cause?

    thanks

Relax. It's a mash tun, so it's on the pre-boil side of your system. Just clean it out after every use and you'll be fine.

As long as it didn't pierce through the lining.

It's hot side so, as VikeMan said, you're good. My mash tun rarely gets more than a thorough spray out with the hose and a once-over with a kitchen scrubber.
