    Help a dummy out.

I had Permanent Funeral for this first time earlier this year, and there was a certain flavor note in it that I'm not the biggest fan of. And b/c of my limited knowledge (as I've only been diving into craft for about a year now), I cant really put my finger on it.

I had Panzer Wolf last night and tasted the same thing (as I understand, PF is maybe a more ballsy version of APW). I wouldn't say it was bad by any stretch...as a matter of fact, if you're a fan of the flavor I'm talking about, you're doing backflips about how well this beer brings out this flavor.

    "its hops, stupid..."

Well, I thought maybe it was the hop variety, but I'm not so sure (based on my initial impression, as well as checking out some clone recipes). Its not a flavor note I get in many other IPA/DIPA's (def not in Heady, Pliny, or most others I've had).

The one thing I can say is that the first and only time I've had Nugget Nectar, I remember tasting something similar (not that those beers are of a similar style, but...)

    Any thoughts?

Can't help with telling you where it comes from, but I'll at least confirm that you're not crazy—I got a unique flavor in APW as well, which I had a hard time describing.

Permanent Funeral and APW are two completely different beers, I do not find many similarities between the two. Permanent Funeral, supposedly a beefed up Zombie Dust, is mostly Citra* and delivers a huge tropical flavor profile. Permanent Funeral is quite smooth in my opinion. I am not sure the hops used in APW, but I always get a very piney, pithy bitter flavor from APW that comes off as a bit harsh.

I can see some picking up a fair bit of bitterness in Permanent Funeral, where is I get more of the tropical notes, perhaps what you are tasting is that sharp bitterness? It may work well for you when accompanied by certain flavors and not so well with others. The other possibility I see is some potential cattiness. Many do pick up a flavor/aroma similar to cat piss with some hop varieties, this would be more prominent in Permanent Funeral.

*I say mostly Citra due to conversations I have had. I am not certain ZD or PF are 100% single hopped anymore.

APW does have a very unique taste of some sort and I happen to enjoy it.

Yes, sorry, I now realize that I read about the connection bt ZD and PF, and not APW. But its til APW and PF I'm speaking about.

The "catiness" seems possible, I'll keep that in mind next time I have it.

A sharp but musty flavor in the first sip? If so, many call that characteristic catty and/or dank as Kzoobrew said.

I used to pick up the flavor all of the time in various IPAs using a few different hops, mainly CTZ, but also Citra and Simcoe. I don't pick up that flavor very often at all anymore, which I have chalked up to palate change/fatigue from the ever-increasing amount of great quality fresh IPA's I drink. Cheers

Drinking Zombie Dust now (all citra, right?) and it doesn't have the flavor I'm thinking of. But it has other ones which are delicious as always.

Serves me right for not drinking the APW or the PF side by side with something else.

I'm still not certain its coming from the hops side of things, could it be anything else?

I'm going to drink every beer in my fridge and figure this all out.

Maybe it does in fact have to do with the freshness...I know the PF wasn't the freshest, but the APW was relatively fresh.

Had APW for the first time at the Big Tap In last weekend, was grotesquely underwhelming. Too boozy and too sweet of a malt presence. Thats all I got out of it

Perhaps I should have worded that better, I meant that I think it has to do with palate change/fatigue. I used to notice the catty flavor in very fresh IPAs, but these days, I have the luxury of only buying very fresh IPA's, and rarely get that cattiness.

Good luck drinking your fridge! :stuck_out_tongue:

I think this is nailing it for me...I didn't see anyone else remark about the malt presence, so I thought maybe it was something else. The sweetness was my initial impression (maybe not how sweet I thought it was, but just the fact that there was some when I was expecting something different).

I ran into some heavy duty stouts that got in the way of me plowing through everything. I guess my fridge laid down some speed bumps for me.
