I am officially done with UPS, for beer trading or anything else. Today was the 2nd time in 3 months that they've put a package on the truck for delivery, then "dropped it" or whatever, and then discarded the whole thing. I truly believe that someone there has en eye out for nice beer and my beer is being pilfered (and probably enjoyed after work). Has anyone else had this problem?

Someone else mentioned that one of the two (UPS/Fedex) always messes his boxes up and advised his traders to use the other (while shipping to him).

They both fuck up. The best you can do is pick whichever seems like the lesser evil.

I'm not talking about messing up. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, in fact I'm a pretty trusting guy. But I am concerned about theft, I think they're using "package was damaged" as an excuse to drink my beer.

I think it has more to do with the fact that the modern American workforce has become so lazy and careless.

Indeed. I judged by their records in getting mine out and delivering to me, and UPS was the best by far in that regard. A bit slower and more expensive, but 0 damaged delivering to me and taking from me. FedEx has damaged 3 boxes coming to me.

It seems to depend on your local office. Here Fedx is far superior to UPS but the opposite was true in other places I've lived.

When you use Fedex are you using Ground or Express? As for theft in Fedex/Ups I can tell you that is very rear. Most customers dont know how to pack right. You should pack your beer like you are shipping your first born.

I have friends that have worked for both FedEx and UPS and I can certainly say that theft does happen more than you would think. There are times when boxes are on their trucks that are not apart of their route. In these cases, UPS does not have any record at all that the box is in the incorrect truck. This means that the driver can then open up the boxes and decide if the contents are worth keeping.

I have much success with both shippers but I too think it comes down to packing the box correctly in the first place. The bottles need to be wrapped like mummies and the box be tighter than a gnats ass to survive all of the shipping monkeys out there

I've used ups for all my trades. I even let the shipper pack them for me. Yeah, maybe I'm too trusting or naive about shipping beer, but all of my trades have maade it to their location unharmed and intact.

Taking what some people say to seriously. Before my first trade I filled some bottles with water and capped them. I then packed the box and dropped it off my patio (about 10-15 ft.). Everything survived so I knew I was doing something right. It might be overkill but I have never had a problem and it was a good lesson before I sent out an actual box of beer.

I've received probably 200 inbound beer boxes. The only 3 that i've lost happened exactly like you said. "out for delivery" followed by "damaged destroyed". I am convinced that my local UPS driver is aware i receive beer.

I instruct all trading partners to use Fedex to send to me. If they insist on UPS, that's fine, it's a risk they can take, but I don't trust my local driver at all.

That said, i don't really see this as UPS's fault. I happen to have a great Fedex driver and a horrible UPS driver. I've been around the BA forums long enough to see this thread in reverse as well. Shitty employees exist in every company.

I have actually still sent outbound boxes with UPS occasionally (because it has nothing to do with my driver) and i've had no issues. I live a lot closer to a UPS store, so dropping boxes off there is sometimes easier than taking them to Fedex.

You're saying it's inconceivable to think that perhaps out of 200 boxes, 3 were ACTUALLY damaged? An 80-90lb box falling over on a box while on the truck, or just a poor packaging job in general may happen 1.5% of the time.... I don't know though.... you might be right, he could be a real ass-clown.

ahh, sorry, i wasn't clear enough. 75% of those or more have been from Fedex because I dropped UPS after losing 3 boxes in < 2 months.

And since then, i've never had a damaged box. Fedex has gone well over 100/100 successfully.

Pack better. Aside from being shot with a gun, my packages can't be damaged.

You should pee in some beer bottles and mail those out. But seriously, I have used both companies doing 2 or 3 trades a month for the past two years and have not had a problem yet (knocks on wood). It may just be shit luck or maybe your suspicion is warranted and you have a crooked driver. If that is the case, the only thing you can do is switch companies, at least until I get these clowns to legalize mailing beer. Or, you could be like that lady who called the police and reported her heroin stolen. Good luck, hope things turn around for you.
