Ahh, I think this is my first post so HELLO EVERYBODY!

Tomorrow I get to go to the biggest beer store that I have ever been to. They claim 1300 different beers in stock.

This is the web site that I think lists every beer:
    http://www.tableandvine.com/catalog/beer.html?page=1

I need advice on what to get.
I don't like IPAs in general. I definitely do not like bitter beer. Some favorites are Brooklyn Brewery Chocolate Stout and Wayerbacher's Merry Monks. I also don't like beers that are aged in wood barrels.

It's been a while and I like Dogfishhead's Palo Santo Maron and Raison D'Etre.

On my hit list right now is Left Hand's Nitro:
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/418/115076/

I'd like to get about 3 or 4 more beers. I prefer 4 and 6 packs to save money but would be willing to get 1 or 2 larger 22oz/750 ml bottle. So this is a call out for suggestions. I prefer higher alcohol content beer and would love to get atleast one beer that is over 10% ABV.

Thanks in Advance. I'll be sure to update the thread with what i bought and what I thought.

    EDIT 1:
Reading the forums, I wouldn't mind trying out an English Barleywine:

This post will be a placeholder for what I buy.

Sounds like we have same tastes. Merry Monks is one of my favorites. Allagash Tripel (4pk and 750 mL), Founders Imperial Stout (4pk) (over 10%). New Belgium Trippel, New Belgium Abbey, Ommegang Abbey Ale, Ommegang Adoration (now available in 4pks). Evil Twin I Love You With My Stout (12% ABV and it's around $13 a 4pk), Evil Twin Lil' B (4pk), Evil Twin Imperial Biscotti Break (22 oz.). Hopefully others can mention some more.

No it won't, because you won't be able to edit it after an hour so, just a general FYI.

Anyway, welcome you are just beginning the journey. So many beers, so little time, it's hard to list. Victory Golden Monkey might be a good one, Stoudts Fat Dog Stout and maybe try some Hefeweizen beers like Sierra Nevada Kellerweis or some saisons perhaps like Ommegang Hennepin. Just a thought. Enjoy the ride.

    English Barleywine: Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot.
Any Belgian style Tripel (similar to your Merry Monks), e.g., Westmalle Tripel, Chimay White, Alagash Tripel
Any Belgian style Dubbel, e.g., Westmalle, Rochefort, St. Bernardus
Any Belgian style Quad (but watch out for the high ABV)
Any German style Dopplebock (e.g., Troegs, Ayinger)

Welcome! Here are some suggestions based on what you've listed and a quick run through their website:
Gulden Draak- Belgian Strong Ale (over 10%)

    Aventinus- Weizenbock
    Vitus- Weizenbock

Traquair House Ale- Strong Scottish Ale

Founders Porter- pretty robust and rich

    Enjoy!

Reading through your list, I agree that we have similar tastes. I've had most of the beer you mention and liked them all. Not necessarily on my "go to" list but difinitly on my radar. I need to be better about reviewing beers on this site so I don't forget what I like and don't like.

Speaking of which, I like dogfishhead's 90 minute IPA and after a year I finally found their 120 minute. I think it was one of my top 3 disappointments in beer when price was taken into account.

I was looking over those English Barleywines and I think I must put one of those on my must have list. not he $50 bottle though even though it sounds delicious.

NO! Why not recommend the styles he likes. Tripels, Imp Stouts, etc.

Weyerbacher Insanity (Bourbon Barrel-Aged Blithering Idiot). So much better than non-barrel version.

That's an English Barleywine? Thought it was an American Barleywine. That is one of my favorites. Good call though!

As for the rest, I see those as wonderfull suggestions.

I hope when I go to the store I have a list in hand.

At this point I was going to suggest Palo Santo Marron.
    Oh, nevermind.
Err... double never mind I guess? :astonished:

Ok then, so assuming PSM is a good start, my favorite non-hoppy beers are
    Alesmith Speedway Stout (coffee stout)
North Coast Old Stock Ale (old ale - similar to barleywine but typically less hoppy)
Oskar Blues Old Chub (scotch ale - heavy caramel malt flavor)

I need to break down and read about the various styles some time. I know what I tend to like but am in general oblivious to the definitions of the various styles.

Staying similar, but branching out a bit- for fun! He seems to prefer malty beers with low-ish bitterness and a good yeast signature; the ones I suggested follow those lines and are pretty damn classic to beers boot. Beers that you should try no matter what , but since they are in his wheelhouse it's all the better.

True- but now you are coloring outside of the lines- he doesn't like BA beers :grinning:.

Is Palo Santo Maron aged in wood barrels or used wood barrels that were used for Bourbon? I know for sure the ones that are used barrels from bourbon and what not that I did not like.

Or is it just that I chose some beers that I happen to not like?

You hate hoppy/bitter beers. Blithering Idiot is all malty sweetness. It IS English Barleywine. I'm talking about the style. English vs American Barleywine, not where it's made.

Founders Porter is a hoppy American Porter. :stuck_out_tongue:

I'm willing o stray into different beers. If there is a rare style beer that i probably never had, I'd definitely be willing to give it a try.

Seems premature to be pointing him to the BB aged version before he's tried the base beer, but yes Insanity is a great intro to BB aging. But having the BI first lets him separate out the effects of the barrel when he gets to Insanity.

I think I misunderstood information in a different thread that inferred that it was regional.

I know I am shooting for 4 or so different beers but I would go up to 8 different I suppose. I want to start a collection in my basement anyways.
