I would have to pick the Ayinger as well, but I'm giving up food for lent in favor of every type of beer!!

Fort Collins Dopplebock ... 10.2% ABV ... sweet, bready, dark fruits, syrupy. A bomber of that feels like a 12 pack of anything else.

I could live with Ayinger Celabrator for 40 days if someone else was buying. Personally I am giving up "giving up" for lent.

Optimator would be a solid choice.

Sort-of-related tangent here, but why is it that 90% of doppelbocks have names ending in "-ator?" I've noticed this when reading over this thread... Salvator, Celebrator, Consecrator, Optimator, Maximator, etc... so many -ator names. Don't think I've seen another beer style with so many names having such a consistent pattern to them (...unless you count "IPAs = hop puns," and even then there's just so many that the non-hop-pun ones balance it out.)

Weltenburger Asam Bock revealing itself as an exceptional Doppelbock tonight, up there with the very best i've had. Not my first take on it but it seems i got it right this time. Wonderful.

And on a side note, as i wrote along these lines on this thread but i am not really sure about it; How does freshness (or lack of) affects Doppelbocks? I know high ABV beers tend to age well and this is often appreciated, but these are still Lagers. My experience-intuition tells me the fresher the better for Doppelbocks, but maybe i am wrong. Any light on this?

I just saw this brew on the shelf at my local bottle shop. I was like, "A new Shlenkerla?!?!" Like a kid that had their favorite band put out a new album without telling anyone. I bought it, and will be drinking it today. Can't wait. The dude at the store said this brew has been draft only previous to this year and that it has just been bottled for the first time. Is that your understanding of it as well? How is it compared to the others?

    Jesse,

Yes, I have read that this is the first year that Fasternbier has been bottled. I had Fastenbier on draft several times last year and among the Schlenkerla portfolio of beers it is my favorite brand.

I have not bought any of the bottled Fastenbiers yet; none of my local beer retailers have received shipment but they are scheduled to get some later this week.

What did you pay for your bottle?

    Cheers!

    Jack

To respond to the OP, this is a great one.

And to respond to @Providence I urge you to go to the German forum and click on the Fastenbier thread for some more information. My thoughts on the Fastenbier are over there, and here's what it looks like, a solid beer for Lent!

Man...Imagine what those monk "fasts" were like...I'm sure they had some minstrel crankin' out the hits on his lute and by the end everyone was speaking in tongues...

I would have thought the same thing, but I once stocked up on my fav Doppelbock because it was a rotating release and it really fell off bad over time. All the complexity in the flavor left and it became a one note boozy mess.

The monks believed that liquids were cleansing so the more your drank the purer you were. They probably ate something solid, although not a lot. They developed their funky monastic cheeses so it is easy to imagine the brothers laying back with a chunk of cheese and a Doppelbock purifying their souls. That said, I do believe I am in need of some purification now.....
