I haven't tried many examples of the style but I really love Ayinger Celebrator. One of my favorite beers

Ayinger is still the best doppelbock I've ever had. love that beer so much.

I'm partial to Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel when fresh, but living in South Central PA; it's pretty darn nice to be able to get fresh Troegs Trogenator. You can't get a fresh dopplebock everywhere in the USA.

    Korbinian
    Andechs
    Celebrator

I would be fine drinking any of the above

Brauerei Hummel Raeucherator and, on every other day, Schlenkerla Fastenbier (to keep my figure trim...)

I can and do get Trogenator and Celebrator often along with a few other brands but to be honest Sam Adams Double Bock is the best by far, just pure malt domination. I can't find the four packs anymore for some reason.

$5.49. For $0.50 more I could have gotten their Doppelbock, which I love, but it was worth every cent nonetheless.

Korbinian is #1, followed by celebrator and Andechs... Then Amsterdam Spring Bock (based on my homebrew recipe).

I've got over 4 Gallons of my homebrew in the fridge right now.

My son's middle name is Augustin.

Real question. I know it's a Catholic thing, and that's it.

Hmm, ok. Thought most people would just go to wikipedia at least. It commemorates the 6 weeks between Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, when Jesus was executed. For most of Christian history, people fasted during Lent (generally one meal a day) and went without meat the whole time.

Doppelbocks wern't just for Lent although that's why they're generally more popular during the spring. In medieval times, there were several holy days of obligation (at least one a week) where a total fast was required and that's what the beer is for.

River City Brewing in Spokane. Their Doppelbock is awesome.
