One of my favorite styles. Love Korbinian, Celebrator, Optimator. Don't sleep on Ettaler Curator - very good version.

The only american version I tried was the Troegs Trogenator and it was pretty good.

I would love to try the Andechs, any of you that are able to get a hold of it, could you PM me for a possible trade?

Hinterland just put out a bourbon barrel dopplebock. I picked one up but haven't cracked it yet. I'm not usually a dopplebock fan but it sounded interesting.

Jack's Abby's Saxonator was really tasty, and Smuttonator is good too, its great to see breweries around the US making delicious lager, now we just need more Doppelbocks and Schwarzbiers!

I haven't tried many in this style but I agree its one that seems to be overlooked. I had Smuttynose S'muttonator recently and thought it was great.

I have a few stashed for just such an occasion... I tried one that was about a year old and it definitely changes some, becomes a little earthy, even oxidized, but it's still pretty good.

Love 'em! Korbinian is probably my favorite now, though Salvator (at like 2.99 for a 500ml) is a great value. However, my all-time fav (even up there w/Andechs) is no longer made...

Tucher Bajuvator, wtf happened to you? :slight_frown:

No love for St. Nikolaus Bock Bier?

I know it's a winter release but I loved it and the reviews agree too. Heck even months after it's release I can find bottles for a dollar and that's pretty sweet.

I have tried many over the years and oddly enough I just don't really dig the style that much, which really surprised and disappointed me, as I was a Lager/malt head for quite some time...I just find them to be too sweet for my tastes.

Well-timed thread! The past couple of days have witnessed a dip in temperature in my neighborhood that presages the onset of winter, which means we're entering my preferred doppelbock season. I've never investigated the style, though, and I've mostly stuck to Celebrator and Korbinian, so the options listed here should prove quite useful.

I just walked on by a sixer of Troegs' version yesterday and now I'm thinking I should head back for it.

Doppelbock is one awesome style, I really enjoy Great Divide's Wolfgang and the Eggenberg Samichlaus.

    Love the style.

I stick with the German examples for regular consumption, though I always try the American attempts. Ayinger Celebrator on draft is very hard to beat, especially a fresh keg. Drinking a lot of that one recently at The Praying Monk here in AZ.

    Korbinian is awesome too.

Optimator & Salvator less often in my fridge.

Some really good beers listed in here already. I think Sam Adams actually makes a decent offering that often gets overlooked.

At present nothing surpasses Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche Doppelbock. And to repeat, in my best Mugatu voice, 'NOTHING!'.

This thread inspired me to try a Dopplebock again after not having one for MONTHS. I drank Troegs', it was not as sweet as I remembered it to be, and I definitely enjoyed it!
