Bought a bottle of Thrilla in Vanilla that turned out to be one of the most overcarbonated beers I've ever had the displeasure of tasting. No vanilla, no dark roasted malt, just off flavors. Upset that I had spent my hard-earned money on a defective beer, I emailed Double Barley telling them of my experience. They promptly responded to tell me that they were aware of a batch of bottles being distributed that had residual sugars in them causing them to overcarbonate. Even after telling them that I wasn't looking for compensation, they asked for my address and offered to send me a replacement bottle. Naturally, I complied and got my box today. It not only contained a Thrilla in Vanilla but also a bottle of their FFF Holiday Ale, a glass and some stickers. This is exactly the type of gesture that earns well-deserved respect for a brewery, particularly ones as new as Double Barley. I'm looking forward to trying the beer the way that it was meant to be and will be sure to look out for more of their offerings in the future. I'll also be sure to visit the brewery to thank them in person if I ever find myself in the Raleigh area. Excellent customer service is the cornerstone of any sales-based business and I'm happy to report that Double Barley has that part covered.

I think they had some issues with bottling that beer. I've had it on draft and 22oz bottle and they tasted so different. Draft tasted so much better. And I've talked with people who have had it at the brewery and have loved it, only to be underwhelmed by the taste of it from the bottle. So if you ever find that you're at a place that is selling it on draft, I would definitely recommend giving it another go, but that's just me.

Aside from thrilla, I've been able to try steak cake stout and thought it was super tasty on draft and in bottle, but I was very underwhelmed by their Wandering EyePA (which had to be old because it was a straight malt bomb) and their fat Charley's raspberry stout, which was too sweet and too artificial raspberry for me.

I think once they get the kinks worked out, especially with their bottling, they'll be much more sought after.

Great read. I'm a fan of the thrilla. Solid beer when I had it a while back. The wandering eyepa was not my fav. Too much sweetness for me for the style and not much hoo flavor. I've been meaning to try more and would like to visit the brewery as well. But kudos to DB for a kind gesture.

Also, they are located in Smithfield. FYI.
