It's what old IPA's and DIPA's do when they're old, it's why bottle dating is a good idea, or buy from a bottle shop that checks the dates, some breweries case date. I hate it when you get stuck with a 6 month old IPA that's dead and malty.

Too bad the OP didn't know that though an out of date DIPA is a better gamble than an out of date IPA.

NJ beer distro is some of the best in the US so I don't think Jess minds missing a few beers here and there. Maybe if more folks took that stand, all of the breweries in the US would put dates on their products.

I had a 2012 about 3 weeks ago and that sounds like what you have. Fresh, this beer is a pinecone bomb. Cant believe it was on the shelves for that long.

One way to figure it out is by checking the ABV%. This year's is clearly marked at 12%. If I remember correctly last years was over13%.

Well I'll be damned then, these bottles had no indication of ABV, just like last year's. All doubt removed, I got some year old IPA.

    This.

I actually prefer aged to fresh, but that's me.

I drank two of them. They were definitely not bad, but I was expecting huge pine and bitterness. Instead I got pungent, sweet caramel, so I was kind of disappointed. That being said, I'm I was already planning to put two bottles from the 4-pack in the cellar, and it's always nice to get a head start when aging something. I've had it fresh so it's not like I'm missing out.

this happened to me with palate wrecker and i was soooooooo mad at my store. if you have beers that are time sensitive you should know to put them in a more prominent spot/run a sale/do whatever you need to do to sell them before they turn. i dont think that's asking much.

Agree with this 100% I have a store in my area that still had some of last years Hopslam and mixed it in with the new shipment they got of this years. Happened to check the bottle on date cuz i had noticed that they had sat on last years for quite some time. :grimacing: Not fucki'n cool.

I discovered Crooked Tree on a trip to MI last year and thought it one of the best IPA's I've had (and I have had plenty). Found a 4 pack of double crooked - bought in MI, took it home and could not even finish one; I am assuming it was way beyond it's shelf life but gotta say when you taste something so terrible you don't wanna try again, I'll stick to the regular octane CT.
