Last year I thought it was pretty good, but not worth the $, and I was definitely in the minority. This year, I think it's good to great, probably better than I remember it, but still a half-step down from the truly legendary Vermont IPAs out there (Abner, Dbl Sunshine, Heady Topper, etc.). It's just a touch boozier than the elites, but there's no denying it's got great hop flavor. It's definitely better than 95% of the IPAs on shelves.

I feel the opposite. Not as good as last year, and honestly a somewhat average DIPA. It's still tasty, but I won't be buying more than the 2 four packs I picked up (should have got just one). Mastermind at 10.99 a 4 pack is more delicious and cheaper. my $0.02

Half and half on each breweries water this year I believe.Last year was all Lawson's well water.Maybe that's the difference because the 1 bottle I had last year was much better than the bottle I just finished.Seems more Otter Creeky and less Lawson's.Glad I didn't get a chance to buy a 4pk.Solid brew for sure though.

    Cheers

You're wrong about water supply. Same for both years. 50% water from each brewery.

"Good to great" and "probably better" than what you remember as "pretty good"= "better than 95% of the IPAs on the shelves"? Your description of the beer doesn't come close to the sentiment in your conclusion.

Stand by what I said. Perhaps "good to great" confused you? In my usage, pretty good is a little better than good, and I used "good to great" to indicate it was bordering on great, which is much better than good. The vast majority of IPAs on shelves are average to good. Where's the issue? If you want to put numbers to it, the majority of IPAs on shelves would fall in the 3.75-4.25 range. Last year I thought DD was like a 4.25 and this year I'd rate it in the 4.25-4.5 range.

I bought a single myself after reading multiple FB posts that were disappointed in the recent batch. I definitely liked it, no question the whole cone hops resulted in a different final product whatever the case may be with the water. I understand most are very glad to get their hands on Double Dose, but it doesn't thrill me for $15 a 4 pack of 12 oz. bottles given the other choices in Vermont.

    it's better than be hoppy.

honestly, i'd say it's better than last year's for me. danker / summit onion/weed-ier. could mean worse for some people. double sunshine and sip o sunshine are worlds "brighter" and both have more spectacular mouthfeels, and the former is definitely a better beer, but i'm really loving double dose.

as for the rest of the otter creek series, kind ryed comes close, but this is the best yet. well, best yet for big hops. this is a "big DIPA celebration" beer, while citra mantra is a legitimate every day beer.

re: the price, no it's not 2x better than beer you can get for half the price. fresh dirtwolf, or fuck, really fresh lagunitas IPA, they are greater than half as good as this--but this is solidly better. it's no heady or abner or *sunshine, but it's better than most year-rounders. as good or better than fresh lunch IMO. better than the week old MBC another one i had last night.

concur with both of you. bonus points from me because i love the summit / simcoe pungency (not sure exactly what hops they used, but they hit the weed notes pretty hard).

I meant the hype and ridiculous bottle limits are like what recently happened with Be Hoppy.

I bought 2 at $7 each in Cleveland Circle, Brighton, MA last night - while I'm guilty of paying it, this pricing outrageousness has got to stop. One of the best guidelines BeerAdvocate has instituted is a $ for $ trading rule. While that is subject to lots of debate related to factors like traveling costs, rarity, etc., I take it for what it means regardless of any of those factors - a $7 Pliny is worth a $7 Jack's Abby regardless of where the trade takes place. So how does one account for egregious over-pricing up and down the value chain from brewery to distributor to retailer? I guess it boils down to "let the buyer beware" and I, for one, should have exercised better judgment on buying that 2nd Double Dose.

I gotta laugh at the people on here talking about the "beer geeks" - uhhh, look at the site you're taking time to peruse and post on. Newsflash: YOU'RE A F****** BEER GEEK!

Being on this website doesn't make a person a beer geek any more than posting on bodybuilding.com makes someone a bodybuilder. Some people who are into craft beer have tendencies, engage in fruitless activites, and value certain characteristics about beer than others do not. These are the beer geeks. I'd use a better name but beer geek is more acceptable.

Double Dose blows away Overgrown and Fresh Slice. It's not a great IPA, but it's pretty damn good. Worth the $16 I paid for it in Vermont, but not much more than that though.

Got 2 4 packs and thought it was really good. 18 bucks for a 4 pack is very steep but I would probably buy another if I saw it but 7 dollars a bottle is ridiculous. It is MUCH better than any of the other Otter Creek IPAs (and I am generally a fan of those anyhow).

They should have just put it in $8 bombers and no one would even blink at the price, because large format beers are *supposed* to be expensive. Or something like that. Kidding aside, happy to pay a bit of a premium for this beer )and even happier it's in 12 ounce bottles), which I loved last year and can't wait to try this week.

Last year, I walked into a popular Mass. craft beer establishment and walked out with a case of it and got a 10% case discount. This year it's nuts! 1 bottle limit!?
