My wife's brothers are both into IPAs, though not nearly so into beer as I am. We've had a several idle discussions specifically concerning the relative ranking of 90 Minute, Whoop Pass, and Double Jack. We never tried any of them side by side.

I brought nine IPAs or DIPAs to Christmas Eve with my in laws, including the three in question. I asked my wife to select three in addition to the original three to make a tasting of six, without me knowing which six were there. We each blindly ranked them from best to worst. "Least best" may be a better description. Long story short:

Double lines mark a close call.

I thought this was super interesting. I also don't think I could do a similar tasting with more beers. I would do fewer next time. The only one I was able to correctly identify blindly was Sucks, even though I've had most of them in the last month. I'm most surprised at the relatively poor showing Hop Stoopid had. In comparison with the other beers, Hop Stoopid had a notable smoke/onion character that I have never noticed the many, many times I have enjoyed it on its own.

After my first cycle through my samples, I laughed and said, "I wouldn't be sad to have a pint of any of these!"

    Any thoughts? Surprises? Similar experiences?

Note: The three unused IPAs were Sculpin, Celebration, and Hercules.
Full disclosure: The Whoop Pass was past its best by date.

looks like a fun tasting. i would like to try them blind like this. Ive tried all the beer listed but dont have access to whoop pass and they all tasty but id guess green bullet would be my favorite.

The results of blind taste-tests are always interesting and always contain at least one surprise. IMO 5/6 is the correct number of beers to taste. More than that just leads to confusion. 4 or less it's to easy to guess what beer it is.

Definitely looking at this list, I figured it'd be between DJ and Sucks. Nice tasting. I have yet to get Double Jack into one of our blind tastings and I've been wanting to.

Unintentionally, that was solved by bringing more than were used in the blind test. We didn't know exactly which beers we were sampling. Plus, we had a couple more tasty beers to share after the main event!

    Love blind tastings.

We did this a few months ago with a mix of hoppy IPA and DIPAs -- six in all. We did not do best to worst, but instead had people try to identify which beer. I mean they were all great brews in our sampling. We had people get zero right on the first try in a couple cases. The best job was one person who correctly identified 2 out of 6 on the first try and then all 6 right on the second (yeah, they were the only cicerone in the group). It's way hard.

I tried something like this before and afterwards a few really good points were brought up -

    1. No matter what order you try them in unless you're super-palate once you've had one good IPA you're perception of taste profiles is "a little" screwed up.
    2. The dates - if any of them was 2 weeks old, it would automatically have a huge advantage over something that was 2 months, or heaven forbid 6 months. For example I never thought Deviant Dale's was that great, UNTIL I got a 4 pack that was 2 weeks old - holy shit that stuff is good, it rivals Sculpin easily.

It's such an awesome idea. I wanted to do something like this with every style of beer, but I realized after doing IPAs that most good beers are just too complex to give everyone a fair shot when tried with everything else. It's fun, but I gave up trying to do it for the "eye-opening" aspect of it. There's just too many factors to consider, and I hate to ruin great beers like Hop Stoopid for myself!

Double Jack, IMO, is the winner for me! I prefer my DIPAs to be hop forward and a decent amount of the Bitterness to shine, and not be too boozy. I am some what shocked
I also agree! Deviant Dales fresh is a Killer IPA. It shredded my palate and I love it for that! Then again I love huge Bitter and Earthy hops!

I absolutely agree with the first point. The second one, I could believe, but I'll have to try it to really believe it.

I'm worried that I've ruined Hop Stoopid. I think it'll be just as great on its own...I hope...

I agree that it would be interesting to see how Sculpin would do in this tasting. I suspect it would compare favorably, although Double Jack is tough to beat. Has anyone on this thread tried Double Dose, the Otter Creek collaboration with Sean Lawson? That DIPA is off the charts good, and might make a strong run against both Sculpin and Double Jack. Would also be interesting to see how Flower Power would do here. Thoughts?

Sculpin after the tasting was mediocre. But, I think a great deal of that was just palate fatigue. I know perfectly well that Sculpin is delicious.

Flower Power? Double Dose? I'd love to try them. Never seen them before.

Trust me, Double Dose is worth seeking out. You will not be disappointed. Would be happy to send you some. Let me know if you are interested in a trade. Thx.

My bro and I did a blind tasting of Belgian Quads and Dubbels last weekend at our Christmas celebration too, I though we were the only ones to pull that, good to see we are not alone!!

I won't hijack your thread with the results of ours.

I've had 90 minute, Sucks, Double Jack, and Hop Stoopid. I would find it tough to guess a winner too, but for me I would probably pick 90 minute. I think 90 minute would be pretty easy to pick out.

Not the beers I would personally choose for a blind tasting, but I like the idea. However, Double Jack is hands down the best of these in my humble opinion. I do like Sucks better than I did last year, but never over 90 minute. The thing I agree with most is Hop Stoopid should be at the bottom. It's hop extract and just not the same for me. There's a reason it's so cheap. My local Harris Teeter which is the only craft beer between work and my home has both bombers of Hop Stoopid (3.99) and a local, Olde Hickory Death by hops (5.49). Ratings indicate the Hop Stoopid should be a whole grade better, but I haven't picked it once despite the price difference.

Sucks is made by the same brewery that makes Hop Stoopid so both are brewed using extracts as far as I know.
