It strikes me the word "Double" serves to differentiate the new one without slighting the old one.

Recently, I have been to NJ, NC, Maryland, DC and Delaware. I was able to purchase Two Hearted in each of those places ... but one cannot purchase it in Virginia! :slight_frown:

Have you ever heard a reason why Bell's pulled out of VA?

    Do you have some links?

I’m not saying you or they are wrong, I’m just curious to learn more.

I would generally have assumed the difficulty in making a dry high ABV beer due to the alcohol is because the alcohol prevents the yeast from completely fermenting out the wort, but both things could be true.

Nope. You do a few different things to get the yeast to ferment the wort to a similar FG even if you start at a higher gravity.

The same exact recipe and final gravity will always be sweeter with a higher alcohol content.

I’m not sure I would call this one sweet. I had one from the bottle the other day and it was definitely malty. Very good. Had one on draft yesterday at the Eccentric Cafe. That one seemed to have more hop flavor/bite. I like the bottled version better. Great balance.

SOHTC is a favorite of mine. The beer place I go to was selling 4 packs at $6.99 yesterday. I passed at over 90 days old. He said they are stopping the 16oz format and going to 12oz so they fit in the mix pack. The mix packs he had were really old.

I did get under 30 day old county line though for $26.99 a case.

    Enjoy

When I’m home NC is only a 20 minute drive. Lousy location but I love their beers. I’ve never had one 3 months old, and I’m usually a fresh freak, but I might have taken a small stab at that.

Two Hearted but sweeter with some well hidden booze sums it up. Pretty good. At $18.99 a sixer I won't buy it again though.

Here's an article I came across that mentions this:

"One of the pitfalls that many homebrewers encounter when brewing their first Imperial IPAs is actually making them too alcoholic. Ethanol accentuates body and sweetness, which can distract from the hops you’ve so lovingly packed into your masterpiece. To let the hops really shine, consider keeping it under 10 percent ABV."

I've had this beer a few times and it was good.. I wouldn't pay 19 bucks a sixer for it though...

I could be wrong but I believe Bell’s named their flagship IPA Two Hearted after a river that’s local to their brewery so maybe they didn’t want to lessen the history behind the original beer or the river so they named this Double Two Hearted.

Both 2 sixers for $15.99 each. Enjoyed one but this ain't Waldos.

Exactly how I felt. Double Two Hearted is way too sweet, almost nauseating sugary headache sweet whereas it doesn't get better than Waldos when it comes to a massively hopped IPA. Also a bit disappointed with Bells as I was hoping for something on the level of Oracle.

Went to my store and asked the beer manager about this beer, he looked at me and said woah, I’d love to try that, never heard of it. So I’d venture a guess this part of the state isn’t going to see it, lol.
