Looks like a couple new releases on the horizon:
    • Smoked Helles
    • Sugar Creek Pilsner
The latter has a curious name so some internet sleuthing indicates possibly this is this beer which Sugar Creek Malt Co. out of Indiana mentioned in reference to Dovetail as having "the designation of being the first brewery to brew with our Edelweiss and the first brewery to brew with this variety since most likely before WW2". Pretty cool! Looking forward to it.

Super excited for the Sugar Creek Pilsner. I was reading about the Edelweiss malt on Sugar Creek's instagram and its really interesting.

So, will these be considered part of the regular beer lineup, or special releases?

    From Instagram:

dovetailbrewery New year, new beer! Sugar Creek Pilsner is a beer about 80 years in the making—but we'll start 5 years ago when the folks from the Midwestern malt house Sugar Creek Malt Company brought back 200g of seed of an heirloom winter 2-row barley originally grown outside of Vienna that hasn't been seen since WWII.

Caleb and his family hand-harvested this descendent of a Moravian-Haná variety until they were able to grow that original 200g seed packet to 10,000lbs of grain and called it Edelweiss. A select number of breweries were able to brew with Edelweiss this year.

For our Edelweiss beer, we triple-decocted, coolshipped and open-fermented before it went into extended lagering, just like they might have done all those years ago. A very easy drinking 4% ABV, the malt showcases notes of flour and bread dough, while the herbal and spicy Saaz hop balances. Enjoy a couple, two, tree!

(This is a taproom-only release; but we decided to can a few cases for to-go—it will be available later this week)

No doubt. Too bad it's Taproom only, like to see them share the love.

Last summer I heard that a local, very divey joint had one of the Helles on tap. With COVID and all, I never got in to check it out. Probably too close to be safe for me.

Why do people have this opinion? It’s something I’ve never understood. What’s the reasoning behind thinking draft is always better than freshly packaged beer? If the brewery is doing their job, it should be impossible to tell in a side by side for a least a few weeks/months, unless dovetail is serving the draft beer with more pressure than they package their cans with.

I don't think @FBarber is speaking from the perspective of draft vs. packaged, I'm not.

I think we're both speaking from our experience drinking Dovetail in both formats. I'm not a huge fan of their Helles out of the can, but the first time I had it on tap I was enamored! I honestly didn't want to leave the bar, it tasted so good (and that wasn't at the Dovetail taproom).

Exactly, it should be, but in my experience Dovetail's cans have been hit or miss in terms of canning issues. I have never been anything but impressed with their stuff on draft.

I pretty much always prefer canned to draft due to my limited ability to actually drink draft beer, but in this case, I have just had enough issues with Dovetail's cans to know that Ill be better off having it on draft.

Oh man, that sounds good. I absolutely love this sort of stuff - bringing a crop back from near extinction and making beer with it! Awesome.

Sugar creek Pilsner is up in the website for ordering now. I just picked up my 4 pack and the folks at dovetail said they are running low.

It’s delicious! Reminds me more of a keller pils. I’ll do a review later with the cans, but my initial reaction is really positive.

Sugar Creek Pilsner...yeah, this is the goods.

I got sweet corn, dry wheat & faint tart peach flavors. Can't really say it reminds me of any other particular lager, but it's really flavorful and unique.

    Glad I jumped on this!!
