My girlfriend and I are going to be in a wedding on long island. We are going down a few days early and staying in Montauk. Our original plan was to stop along the way and stay one night (Sunday, a week from today) near Captain Lawrence to break up the drive a bit and check it out. Well, the tasting room is closed on Sundays. Any ideas for a good backup plan? I want to check out a brewery or something beer related. Peekskill Brewery is in a convenient location along the way. I cant really think of any other better options.
My first impulse was to tell you to get a map, then go on the BA directory and pick a place, but I will also give you some suggestions. Newburgh - Newburgh Brewing Co. [New Brewery] - check for their days/hours. Kingston - Keegan Ales [Brewery] - check for their days/hours. Sleepy Hollow - Bridgeview Tavern [Beer Bar] Peekskill - Birdsall House [Beer Bar] & Peekskill Brewery [you know] Brewster - DeCicco's [Beer Bar inside a supermarket] Need More? See the first line of the post.
Here's another thought. Drive down this way on Saturday and go to Captain Lawrence and another place or two.
You could also stop by Defiant in Pearl River, but Peekskill is a must in my opinion. You could also swing by the Bronx Ale House if you're coming down the Thruway- if you get off exit 11 (Van Cort Park South), the BAH is right off the exit- make a right at the light, your second left, find a parking spot near Visitation Church and School and walk to 238th and enjoy some amazing beers and great food at the BAH.
Thanks for the suggestions. BAH has kbs on tap right now...how long does something like that last down there?
I had it yesterday and it was off the hook. It really depends, since it's a 11.2 it might not go as quickly, because enough people might steer clear of it, but good shit like that usually lasts a week.
Once you get out east, the Southampton Publick House is a must-stop on the way to Montauk - right off of County Road 39 in Southampton. In Montauk, Montauk Brewing just opened its doors and has a nice tasting room. There is also the new Zum Schneider just down the street pouring a nice selection of German beers, same as the location in Manhattan. Many of the restaurants in Montauk will pour a couple of local crafts - Blue Point, etc. - but nothing mind-blowing. There is also a number of beer bars and breweries along the way further west on Long Island worth noting if you're willing to take a bit of a detour, but if you're looking for a quick on-off from the expressway, the Tap & Barrel in Smithtown is right off exit 56 - 52 taps, lots of locals.
when on LI. Bobique and Blue Point in patchogue... the Blue point White IPA in cans is worth getting a six pack or two...also Great south bay brewery in bay shore is fun place to stop in on, they fill gowlers and have bottles available...Peekskill is a very worthy destination...Peekskill brewery, Birdsall, and Deciccos in Brewster or ardsley are cant go wrong stops....Defiant is pretty marginal IMHO
Greenport Harbor is excellent as well, though on the north fork. it is in a nice quaint little town that is fun to walk around in as well...not to mention all the wineries in the area. I'd also recommend blue point. While their beers aren't mind blowing, the venue is really laid back and has a great vibe...plus they almost always have something interesting on cask or their tap lines that doesn't make it outside of the brewery...it is definitely a detour south though for about 20 mins. I work near there, so I go often (tasting room is only open thurs - weekend though, so check the site to see if the timing will work for you). I'd also recommend skipping Port Jeff as I made the mistake of thinking that the tasting room would be like other tasting rooms I've been to, but I was mistaken. I like their beers, but the tasting room is just a single small room with no seats and they are only allowed to give you 2 oz pours of what they have on tap and cannot sell you a pint and if you buy a growler you cannot consume on premises, so basically you are in and out of there in less than 5 minutes...MAJOR let-down. When I went there, they had 2 beers on tap. You can access a wider variety of their beers in most bars and bottle shops. VERY excited to hear about montauk brewing as I'll be out that way this weekend. I had no idea that it even existed.
If you happen to stop at Decicco's in Brewster on Sunday I will be Bartending that day. Make sure to say hello!
