First time visit to Atlanta coming up next week for airwatch convention, then flying into traverse city for a weekend with beer friends. Any tips on can't miss beer spots or a local beer I need to stock up on to share with friends. Won't have a car but staying at Hyatt regency, not sure if that is close to any beer stores.

A couple quick tips to add: First of all, Downtown is a somewhat lagging regarding beer compared to Midtown or Decatur. There is Max Lager's, and ours is better than most, but you're not going to get a good feel for ATL beer there.

My two best suggestions would be to take MARTA to the Decatur Station (E6) and walk out to the Brick Store Pub for a great experience there. From there, you may be able to make your way over to some of ATL's better breweries such as Three Taverns and Wild Heaven. Ale Yeah! Decatur is in the vicinity, but not quite near the Decatur Square. My second suggestion would be to hire an Uber to take you to places not served by MARTA rail, such as the better bottle shops (Hop City, Greens) or bars (Wrecking Bar) etc. ATL does have good Uber service.

Perhaps people more familiar with transportation to and from Downtown could weigh in?

I guess I'll go one further to say that you might consider planning a focused trip if you have dedicated time. If it were me, I'd do either:

    1) A trip to the Porter Beer Bar and Wrecking Bar, followed by a trip to Green's for bottles, if beer bars are your thing. For this, you can take an Uber to the Porter, then walk to Wrecking Bar, and Uber back to your hotel dropping by Green's along the way. I'm also partial to the Bookhouse Pub across the street from Green's. You'll get to see some serious L5P culture along the way.

    2) A trip to the Brick Store Pub, followed by a tour of Wild Heaven or Three Taverns, and perhaps a ride by Ale Yeah! for some bottles. You can take MARTA to the BSP, then walk about a mile to 3T and drop by Wild Heaven a bit down the way. You can use Uber to make the connections if needed. You'll need to check the tour times for this one.

That leaves out a lot of excellent places, and it'd be a shame if you missed Hop City, Orpheus, and the like, but a concentrated trip might save time and help you make the most of ATL.

You could also uber to Orpheus and walk a mile and a half down the beltline trail to Bookhouse/Greens. Or get crazy and walk another mile and a half to Krog Street Market/Hop City. The beltline is a pleasant walk with great views of downtown and lots of places to eat and drink along the way.

Yeah I will second that beltline deal if you like exercise. Krog street is great for food and beer. 2 miles from krog street to Piedmont Park.

nice and flat sidewalk the whole way. easy walk.

So I've never been to Atlanta before either. Any suggestions for local or regional beers I should keep an eye out for at bars/restaurants/bottle shops? Good stuff I'm reasonably likely to run across? I've had several Terrapin beers, but not much else from the area. Thanks.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I am going to be in downtown ATL tomorrow without a car or a lot of time. I just want to try Tropicalia on draft. My research indicates that Augustines and Vortex Midtown have this IPA. Any other suggestions or comments about these two bars would be appreciated.

I checked out both websites and I have to point out that Augustines says it was last updated on April 1st and I doubt the Vortex list is updated very frequently, so they might not have it. How were you planning to get to these places (walking, uber/lyft, Marta)?

Thanks, I completely missed that the Augustine list was updated over a month ago. And the Vortex list didn't feel like something completely current. This is really what made me post my question about downtown options. Of course, I did not want to be someone who did not research threads on my own.

I was also considering Kirkyard but it seems like it would be a 30 min Uber ride each way. I am staying at the Omni due to a trade show. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would try the Hop City bar at Krog Street Market. You could also give Augustine's a call to see if they have it.

    Not beer, but...

Gladys Knight Chicken and waffles, but bring cash because their credit card machine is always on the fritz. But hey, they do suspiciously have an on-site ATM that they will recommend.

    Varsity... WHATLLYAHAVEWHATLLYAHAVEWHATLLYAHAVE!

And at the vortex, the Ka'mana Wa'na Lei'ya is off the chain!

Skip the Vortex. Out of towners swear by it, but it's far from the best burger in town. Average at best.

Corner Tavern, either the Edgewood, L5P, or East Point location, do the best burger in Atlanta. The Wrecking Bar is a very close second.

Piggy backing this since its already bumped... I'm coming into Atlanta next week for a conference and staying a few blocks from the Georgia World Congress Center and wont have a car, any recommendations for bars in that area with solid tap lists as well and any stores to check out ideally in walking distance. Also anything interesting releasing next week? Thanks in advance.

Not aware of anything interesting dropping next week. Hop City westside is a long walking distance. I might walk over there and Uber back with a heavy box of beer.

Nothing extraordinary as far as bars in that area but you will have access to Marta which will get you to some of the hotspots. Inman Park station for a 10 minute walk to Wrecking Bar and Porter. Decatur station for Brick Storre and Twains. A little further away from Decatur station but well worth it is Three Taverns. You could also drop in Blue Tarp if you have time and your liver will allow at that point. Have fun. Let me know where you end up. I may be able to join you for a beer or 3.

Agreed, Marta to the good spots, as the downtown area really only has the Biergarten (it's good, but limited on selection as it's all German). Augustine's is probably the next closest, or Noni's (Italian, fantastic food, solid beer choices), but those would be a good hike on foot.

Max Lager's is a good brewpub and isn't a long walk from there.

Inman Park is about a 10 minute train ride, and Decatur about 15 minutes. These are the best spots if you have the time. For stores, Hop City has already been mentioned and would require either a bus ride or uber. There's another good brewpub next door to it called 5 Seasons. Ale Yeah is close to the East Lake station, and also about a mile from the Decatur square so you could combine it with that.

If you go to the 5 Seasons Westside location, be prepared for really poor service. Good beers, good food, but that one in particular hasn't made any efforts to hire people who are good at serving.
