I will be attending a convention at the LA convention center for a few days later this month. Looking for some solid craft bars and btl shops in the downtown area. Also is it worth taking an Uber out to Monkish, Bottle Logic or the Bruery? Thanks in advance for all the help
I visited LA a couple months ago... and will revisit LA again in a couple months. But I think the answer to your question depends on what kinds of beers you like... - Monkish is known for their NE-style IPAs. but they usually have 1 - 2 on tap. - The Bruery is known for a lot of Belgian stuff, barrel aged stuff, experimental stuff. (Although Bruery Terreaux is even more experimental than The Bruery) - Bottle Logic has some fantastic imperial stouts / barrel aged imperial stouts. Not sure about their regular beers though.
if you're interested in going to the OC I would recommend taking the metro from Union Station, then Lyft (not Ubur). taking a cab all the way there will be costly. the train station is very close to Noble. from there Bruery, Bottle Logic are not too far Barbara's at the Brewery is the best craft bar in downtown in my opinion. Also a chill place to hang out and eat. And not insanely crowded, even on weekends taking a Lyft to Torrance is a haul, but could be worth it if you really want to check out Monkish/Smog. I don't know about metro over to there. I'm guessing you can I've never taken it.
I'd have to say that Monks is also known for their Belgian style ales too. I mean that how they began here.Right? Then the NO IPA sign came down and they started to brew the haze ipa their way. So you got the best of both worlds. I guess UBER or Lyft wouldn't be to bad if you go from DTLA to Monks. Or you could take our awesome train system from DT to Long Beach and walk over to Beachwood/Blendery LB. I'm guessing and Uber would cost you an arm and a leg to the Bruery.
Have you been to DTLA before? I mean if you're trying to get to the places you listed on top of attending a convention, you're going to be spending a lot of potential drinking time just sitting in a car. The Metro is a better option, but then you're limited to where it goes. Maybe just stay around DTLA? Arts District, Mumford, Iron Triangle, and Angel City are all over on the east side of downtown (the Arts District). You can probably Uber to those for $5 and then walk between them. Golden Road is AB-InBev owned but makes some solid beers. Closer to the convention center is the new Mikkeller bar and a Karl Strauss location. If you've just got a couple days, DTLA has more than enough options.
There's also Boomtown Brewery and Indie Brewery Company east of DTLA. Although I can't vouch for their quality, haven't checked them out yet. Best bet is Arts District Brewing and Mumford both fairly close to the convention center (roughly a mile away), Angel City and Iron Triangle are skippable IMO. Far Bar in Little Tokyo has a decent tap selection, no bottles to go though. There's also the Whole Foods in DTLA with its bottle selection and restaurant. The prices at the bar is iffy (which is expected for WF) and there's ambivalence toward the beer guy at the restaurant but it's still an option. There's also City Tavern nearby as another craft bar option as well as the new Mikkeller place.
I'd go with this--especially with the brand new Mikkeller location--and if you want to take a 25 min ride to Highland Park you can hit Hermosillo/Highland Park Brewery. Btw Golden Road is inside Grand Central Market, which also happens to be a f*cking amazing place to find all sorts of great food.
Since I really only have a few hours one night Barbara's sounds like a winner. If I have time should I also checkout Sunset Beer Company? Any chance they might have some Russian River sours or other goodies?
Barbara's has RR spurs most of the time but I believe for on site consumption only. Check the fridge behind the bar
So Im somewhat a monkish fanboy, it extends beyond the beer, Henry and Adrianna are fantastic people, but i digress. To consider them only for being known for their NE style IPA I kind of took that as an insult hahaha. They were slept on for a good while even though their Belgians were freakin outstanding, and of course they're murdering the haze game right now which to me isn't a surprise.
Sunset doesn't have an RR account unfortunately, but it's a great bottle shop and cool place to hang out.
Barbara's, Mumford, Mega Bodega, Mikkeller in DTLA. If time allows, def come down to Torrance and check out Monkish. Also smog city is just a block away from monkish so you can make the most out of that trip.
Little Bear. For some reason always gets passed up in threads like this. Maybe BAs just don't like Belgian beer enough?
This. While I agree with every other recommendation in this thread, Metro from DTLA to Long Beach is an excellent option.
Went to Barbara's last night really nice place and was able to take a couple RR sours home. Thanks for all the advice. Any reviews of Beer Belly? Was thinking of heading there tonight
