I'm going to be staying in the Station Square area this week. Looking for some good bars and bottle shops in the area.

Thanks again for the advice or pointing me towards the correct thread.

South Side (mainly along East Carson Street) has an abundance of bars. Fat Head's, Piper's Pub, Carson St. Deli to name a very few that have solid craft selections (bout a mile and a half walk straight down Carson St. from Station Square). Further down Carson is SouthSide Works which has Hofbrauhaus.

There's a Sharp Edge location in downtown, they have a fair share of Belgian offerings.

As far as a bottle shop, you could take the Monongahela Incline to Packs and Dogs. It leaves from just across Carson St at Station Square and you get off at Shiloh Street. Packs and Dogs is a block and a half down Shiloh.

I've only been there one, but Urban Tap on carson street was cool too. Nice selection on tap and a big TVs

People don't seem to like it but i'm still all for Grist House as well, you should check that out

Smoking Joe's on East Carson near Fat Heads has a great selection, 30+ quality craft drafts and over 200 bottles

My pick would be the Sharp Edge downtown near the convention center, you can take the "T" rail service from station square to Wood street, its a short ride, and walk up from there, cabs are hard to come by in Pittsburgh but you should be able to get one from your hotel to downtown and there is a Marriot across from the Sharp Edge. There are bars in Station Square but not craft bars. I would not recommend walking from your hotel to the Southside, the area between Station Square and the Southside is rough at best and cabs don't pick you up in the Southside.

Thanks for all the advice so far. Also, thanks @misternebbie for the heads up on the bad part of town. I've made my fair share of mistakes heading into areas I might not have had I known where I was going. The good news is that I will have a car there. So, transportation shouldn't be an issue.

    Two questions:

    1. When are you arriving?

    2. How much Abrasive can you bring with you?

Echoing sbb32, hit Carson St. on the South Side; basically, Station Square is the far western part of Carson St. and all the action is east of you. When I'm in Pittsburgh, I like to hit the Double-Wide Grill and Over the Bar (simply known as OTB). Both have good selection and carry some Western PA brewers (other than Iron City, of course).

    Arriving tonight.

Only allowed carry on baggage by company for a short trip.

Just echoing all the above posts, there are like half a dozen + solid bars for beer on E. Carson. The standard recommendation always used to be hit up Fatheads, Pipers, and Smokin' Joe's (they're all along the same 2 block stretch of E. Carson -- 18th to 20th St.). If you're still standing, keep exploring.

Of course stop at Fat Heads, but also The Library on 23rd (I believe) usually has some good beers on tap that are half off between 5-7 and 10-12, and their small plates are half off too. They make some damn good food.

Is it 10-12 now? Used to be 9-11 for second happy hour.

Half off small plates is 9-11; half off drafts is 10-12. It's confused me before.

Hmmmm... Yeah, that's definitely different than it used to be. They've changed the parameters of that happy hour so many times though.
