With the recent buzz about the latest DR release, I dug into the cellar to grab a bottle of DR 12. I had bought several 6 er's of this on its release but never cared for it. Several ended up being drain pours or 'mixed' with other beers to make it palatable. Tonight's bottle is coming across as actually being quite good. It has that sweet, malty taste that before had turned me off but now it seems to have some depth and complexity to it. I'm curious what others out there think about DR 12 and if aging is making it a more enjoyable brew.
The oldest ones I have are a 3 and a 6, and I imagine they're going to taste in line with wet cardboard.
@turfy I wonder if your tastes have changed more than the bottle has changed? Each time I open a 12, I find very few differences (subtle ones though) between bottles. The reason I suggest is that similar happened to me with DR10. First bottles I had, around release day, I did not care for. Now it's one of my favorites because my tastes have changed to the point where the style is more appealing to me.
Coincidentally I drank a DR12 bomber the other night. I thought it was quite sweet on the front end as well. I liked it.
Don't know how some people pour beers so easily. I've only done that with 2 beers ever. One was a Sam Adam's Double Bock that tasted horrible and the other was in infected FUN008. Very good chance that is the case. I've enjoyed 12 since it 1st came out. I have 2 left and wish I had more.
Years ago I used to never drain pour. It was almost a mental thing that I had to finish it or unless it was THAT bad then I would drink it. Now, even if its considered great by many, if I'm not in the mood for it anymore (ie too sweet after a few sips), or there is just something about it that turns me off then down the drain it goes. There are too many good/great beers out there to drink if you're not thoroughly enjoying the one you are currently drinking. Not to mention, I've been sitting on too many beers for way to long. It gives me an excuse to open another bottle.
Honestly, the only beer I ever poured out was a glass of Abyss that was in my fridge over night, but my bother said the other night when I told him to finish a beer for me because I didn't need anymore: "finish what you start." I get the whole tossing it if it's not you're shit, but at some point, you might like it.
You're right, at some point I may like it but that is part of my point. If I'm not enjoying it at that moment then why bother drinking it? Sure, I can set it aside and see if I'm in the mood for it later but that's a big if. I should make it clear that I have very rarely poured out what most people think is good (can't even think of an example right now) but I have poured out plenty that had off flavors. Yes they were drinkable but not enjoyable...to me.
Haha, you know damn well that's not I meant, hopefully it didn't come across that way to others. I just meant different people enjoy different beers DR 15>Ten Fidy (I actually haven't tried DR yet but since your opinion blows, I know it's gotta be better) and some beers I consider good others consider bad and vice versa. Now go back to drinking that barrel aged Ten Fidy #8.
I know what you meant, I've done the same. After having a friggin delicous Bishop's Barrel 8, I thought giving you a little shit was in order!
