I can understand if websites like beermenus.com or taphunter.com aren't updated (since from what I understand they are user dependent for updates), but if an actual brewery or bar doesn't take the time to update their lists it really rustles my jimmies.

They even have plenty of NJ locations in their database. I live in Stanhope, a small town in Sussex County. And sure enough, the places I frequent are in there. Very cool. Signed up for a weekly email. Appreciate the info.

There's a place down the street from me with an excellent reputation and a solidly curated collection of ~20 taps. However, their list online hasn't been updated since June 2, 2013. It's a bummer. I'd probably go in there more if I knew what was going to be on. There are just too many other options within walking distance where I can be sure I'll like at least a couple things before I'm in the door.

There is a bar in Cambridge, MA that has been open since 2011 and they still don't have a working website. Usually this wouldn't bother me but when they have almost a 100 taps it's a bit frustrating. To say the least I don't even bother going.

That is very frustrating. But you know what? I'd prefer that to an establishment that has a website and no updated list. If you don't have the website at all you're telling me "We don't care about our website or people looking for us. We'll get our business from word of mouth." But when you have a website, you're telling me, "We want you to know where we are and what we offer, but we're too lazy to maintain this thing and too stupid to realize that it's a waste of money to even have it to begin with." While neither of those two approaches are ideal (in my opinion) I'd MUCH prefer the first way.

Assuming this is Meadhall. If you can't find something good to drink on the 100 taps there that's a problem with you, not them.

Take heart, it says "Site coming soon." :slight_frown:

While one can definitely find something to drink there, there isn't really an excuse for a place like this that builds its reputation on beer to not have a decent website listing tabs. It's the year 2014 people.

sometimes you gotta know where they post. A few bars I like to frequent use FB and rarely update their websites.

No doubt that is happening, but it raises the question yet again, why have the website draft list to begin with? Not everyone is on facebook.

I always figured they considered it to be too much of a hassle. I've never done this, but I would imagine that just letting the manager know that it hasn't been updated in a long time and that you are hesitant to go there because of it would probably work fairly well.

You have a really low threshold for being the victim of an 'attack'. I'm sorry you are so sensitive. I was saying they care about the beer they have. What is on the hundred taps would be nice to know, but you can go there knowing you'll be getting something good regardless. Avoiding the place because they don't have their website/social media game together is your loss.

The problem is that there are a number of good drinking establishments in the area. If I'm deciding to go somewhere on the rare occasion I go out, it would be nice to take a quick peek at the internet and get a reasonably updated list.

Also, it's basically on MIT's campus. No excuse for not having a website.

No it's not a stretch at all. When a place takes care of the little things, it usually takes care of everything. When the little things get overlooked, chances are other things get overlooked as well.

FYI - When's there more than one bar in a given area, a list helps decide which one to frequent.

Having worked in the industry a while and knowing a lot of owners and managers I know a lot of people don't update so they get people to come in. I know that sounds stupid but they'll leave their list not updated on an old special release hoping people will come in looking for that and just stay anyways. Shitty move and I know not along the lines of what the OP is saying but just some things I have come to find out about...and you can't claim false advertising because all they have to say is that on whatever date they had those beers. Still a shitty move

I appreciate this response. This is a perfect example of what I was searching for, an industry practice that I was simply ignorant to.

I can see the merits of doing such a thing 5 years ago when the availability of amazing fresh craft beer was lower. But now, when there are way more bars (restaurants too) with dedicated craft taps that are adding in new beers all the time, I don't think the "let's hook 'em in with an outdated tap list" will work as well as it once did (if it ever worked).

I agree that if you publish a tap list you should take the time to update it regularly.

But personally I prefer no tap lists at all.

Like anything else discussed on BA, personal circumstances are obviously going to dictate people's opinions. If I lived in rural Idaho and had the choice between two beer bars, that are each 40 miles in different directions, then yeah I'd like to know what's what beforehand. But in NYC, I'd rather just be pleasantly surprised. Like Rekrule said, if a beer geek can't find something to like at a bar with 20,30,50,100+ taps, then they're the problem, not the bar. And in NYC, if a bar posts that it has (insert rare beer), then there's a flood of geeks from all over the tri-state area who normally don't patronize the joint. I'd rather stumble upon something - and my chances increase if I'm going there on a regular basis anyway.

Anyone in NYC go to the CBS tappings at the Founders Events @ Blind Tiger in 2012 and 2013? Was I the only one who preferred the 2013 event where they didn't announce they had CBS? Lasted a few hours, rather than it being 10 deep at the bar and kicking in 13 minutes.
