When I was a young lout growing up near Aberdeen, Scotland. There were a few pubs down the harbour that were open at 7 am.
Mainly serving fisherfolk back from the sea, porters and sellers/buyers at the fish markets, also night shift workers, lads on their way to away games(me) and prostitutes enjoying a drink after a hard night's work.
Talking to friends back home i think one still survives.

There's some bars on the water in Portland, ME that still open at 6 am for fisherman.

There were still some near the working car plants in Michigan that opened at 6 to serve the fellas getting off 3rd shift.

If anything, in our often 24 hour world, it makes more sense these days for many urban/industrial areas to offer publican services bright and early.

When working in Aberdeen, I remember a place called Fittie's Bar which is in that area. Can't remember off the top of my head now when they opened, but wouldn't surprise me if they did open early like that.

The Fittie used to be quite a place and opened early, but now its 11 AM. I hear only the Spirit Level opens at 7am and Aitchie's at 8 am.

Oh I loved Aitchie's. One of the bartenders there gave me great tips on pub crawling around Edinburgh when I had a few days off, and gave me a contact for a great little local hotel to stay at. Can't recall that name off the top of my head, but got a nice discount because the Aitchie;s guy called the hotel ha.

Outside of that I hung out at Prince of Wales, The Grill and Atholl House, the last cause that was right next door to the company staff house I stayed at.

I’ve heard my wife tell her parents/my in laws that we can’t go to an event on Sunday because I’m drinking a breakfast beer. The reality is that she doesn’t want to go and have to miss football Sunday and so she uses it as an excuse (cause even if I am drinking a breakfast beer it’s only one and I’m good to go anywhere). Makes me sound like a horrible alcoholic, but I too don’t want to go to said event and miss football sunday, so whatever….

    PS my wife is awesome.

    haha

Having worked my fair share of overnight shifts I actually think this is nice. Working nights has its own way of being isolating and in lots of ways “off”. Having a place to congregate with fellow night peers can bring a sense of normalcy. It’s not frowned upon for someone working a long day to go to happy hour at 6pm for a beer or two and some food, why should it be a faux paus for someone working overnight to do the same thing at 6am after their long night of work?

Although I only did this a couple of times (a local Irish Pub opened at 7am on weekends during EPL season), it was completely harmless (regardless of what the WHO says), quite a bit of fun, and honestly good for my mental health I’m sure.

Exactly. I work nights. . I would love a place to have a beer and chat. But "normal" people just think you are an alkie!

The Grill was an old favorite of mine. Back in the early 80s they still didn't have a ladies bathroom! Real old style .
You had to stand outside the door if your girlfriend was in.

There were bars near the port and factories in New Jersey that were open early morning on Fridays that would cash paychecks of the third shift workers. Of course everyone stayed for a couple. I don't know if this continues now. I'm retired and don't know if paychecks still exist.

There was a bar in the town neighboring my hometown that was famously located along a trolley line. That line ran directly into a large steel mill. The bar closed at 2am as required by law, but opened at 6am every day to catch the night shift guys on their way home. The family that ran the bar lived on the second floor above the establishment.

My guess is that this was common in industrial cities.

8 pints per day of a mild ale really isn't a ridiculous amount of alcohol. We're not talking about a 12% barrel-aged stout here.

Well unless those were UK pints at 19.2 oz. Even at 3% ABV you're still looking at nearly 8 standard drinks.

Many bars here in Pittsburgh opened at 6am back in the day for the steel mill shift workers. Sadly the mills are mostly gone and many bars don't open till 4pm. A couple of my favorite craft bars I use to go for lunch and a beer open now at 4pm. It's hard to find a brewery that is open Monday and Tuesday and before 4pm during the week. Being a retired guy I miss the earlier hours.

I don't/can't do that but it's a common thing. I can only add a similar voice to the chorus I'm hearing here of 3rd shift bar patrons and some lowlifes. Many from industrial jobs, railroad, welding, plating, manufacturing, steel mills, etc. Hard, dangerous working conditions and hard drinkers at a few dumpy bars...and here a hand full right on the Mississippi river (used to be more). Bars that had happy hour from 9 am to noon. Loser pull tabs, popcorn & peanut shells all over the floor. Frozen pizzas. That one guy that enjoys the big jar of pickled pigs feet. 8 pints for sure! Betcha it wouldn't take long to find that there are a few still serving. Though almost gone from MPLS, I reckon ST Paul still has a few. :beers:X8

It did happen before that when we were on a short trip somewhere, I was sampling local beers a bit more intensively than I do normally… Not 8 pints, just 4-5-6 every day we were there. So many beers, so little time…
