Is this allowed? If so what's the etiquette on it? I spent a whole journey with a bottle of M&S Porter burning a hole in my bag!

All I know is if you drink Buckfast, special brew or export on a train, you should always share it with an imaginary friend.

I've never tried boozing on a train, but I've seen plenty of other people doing so. Also the snack trollies that go round sell beer and wine, so I guess alcohol is perfectly acceptable. But make sure you take some good quality glassware with you - no drinking out of the bottle/can!

On a recent train journey I was sitting across from a couple who were both drinking a bottle of Achel Blonde. I complimented them on their impeccable choice and everything was going swimmingly when I couldn't help but chastise them both for drinking such a fine beer straight from the bottle.
    Back to bed now.

The etiquette is: open it, drink it. If I'm on the train after a festival, with glass to hand, I'll pour it. If there's no glass or cup, I'll neck it.

Readers of a nervous disposition will not want to know that I have drank Rochefort straight out the bottle.

It's absolutely fine, the only exceptions I am aware of are LUL and sometimes in relation to football games 'dry' trains are announced to stop fans (and the train!) getting smashed!!!

I used to drink carry outs (with plastic pint glass) fairly regularly circa '95-'05 when I followed football

Funny you should mention this, did an Amtrak trip last Saturday (11+ hours!!!) NYC to Montreal

You are not allowed to bring your own alcohol onto Amtrak, unless you have a private compartment, and the alcohol can only be consumed in this comparment!

That said the restaurant cars now feature a 'guest' craft beer ! In days gone by all you would find was BMC piffle and Sam Adams Boston Lager

On my train on Saturday they had Dogfishead 60 so fair play!

Needless to say we brought our own beer on and drank discretely - out of vision of the conductor!

I managed to consume a Brooklyn Local No.2, Southern Tier Gemini, Firestone Walker Union Jack IPA and an Ommegang 3 Philosphers, had to keep in practice before we hit Montreals finest!

One of our party was on the DFH 60 at 8.45 am!!!

I had a whole thread on this (don't know if the old threads have now been deleted). Drinking on trains is fine- drinking on the underground is not. Drinking on the train is one of my favourite activities- i think it seems quite civilised. My sister lives next to the Bottle Shop in Canterbury and there's nothing I like more than visiting her and then grabbing a couple of bottles for the hour or so trip home. Cash back!

if you must drink on the train, it should be on KWVR in the buffet car which is listed in The Good Beer Guide.

Sorry I only have Great Western Railway. They said they had a bar on board so I might go and have a look if they have a buffet cart this time.

Got 4 different Hog's Back Brewery offerings from a whistle stop in Paddington, and drank one with my lunch!

I'm surprised that Whistle Thief stocked one Hogsback, let alone four !!! The best I'd have expected from them would be a bottle of Bishops Finger or an Old Speckled Hen!

They actually had 5! I didn't fancy a strong dark ale on a hot day though. I got TEA, Hop Garden Gold, Gardeners Tipple and Brooklands Gold Star.
