WHen I work from home I always have a beer for lunch. All my prior jobs were small companies and we had beer fridges, they're very common at many such companies here in the Twin Cities, especially tech related companies. HEck one of my first professional jobs now has a kegerator. This is the same job where we started "Beer for lunch Fridays" where we'd go to a different bar/restaurant every Friday for lunch.

Most of these companies have a rough standard of the fridge being off limit until X time.

The big corps don't usually have it, some do, my current gig my boss likes beer and loves happy hour, so usually once a month mandatory happy hour happens and he zips down our cubicals and hollars out a bar and we bolt.

Being in the Navy seriously hinders my ability to do this. Now when we hit a port or have a command function on the other hand...

Worked for a materials testing/geotech firm for a while where beer was allowed after 4pm, unless the boss was out of town- then it didn't matter.

FWIW we also smoked weed out back all the time. It was a bit of a free-for-all to be honest...

It is well known that mental operation hits a sweet spot around 2-3 beers or .075. Brain activity and mental concentration/creativity spike bigtime. The only problem is staying at that spot. It is not possible to maintain with success.

so basically if you need to rthink really well for a short period of time then it works, but only for a little while and after you are worse than before.

There almost always are a few Goose Island IPAs, Heinekens and a few others in the refrigerator at my work. I think some of the "higher-ups" hang out after work (it's a small office) and talk, watch a movie/sports, order pizza, etc. If they only knew that I drink stuff like Vanilla Rye, Cantillon, etc. ... haha! I wonder what they'd think if I put something like that in the refrigerator.

This will make me sound old, but...
In the late 70s-early 80s whenever I worked in our satellite office, I'd take my staff out for lunch at Herb's Grill. We'd eat fried chicken and share a pitcher of Bud. Nobody got drunk or impaired, and we all enjoyed some non-work time together.

I can't even begin to imagine doing that in this time and age!

If I could drink beer at my sedentary job I would weigh 500 lbs. But more power to those of you that can do it responsibly.

This is an interesting post to me because it reflects the stark contrast between my two careers. By day I'm an elementary school teacher. Thus, drinking on the job would be grounds for termination and a serious buzz kill. However, I'm also a jazz pianist who performs nightly several times a week. One of the great benefits is that I get free booze at my gigs. As a result I have been able to sample several beers I would otherwise have to pay for. In this scenario, drinking on the job is fun and arguably a pre-requisite.

Id get fired if I had possession of alcohol on the job, drinking it!? Bad part is I work offshore for up to 8 weeks at a time, so I have to go long periods without a single brew at all!

I'm a carpenter, so I don't work in an office. My partner and I do "Beer Friday" every week, we both bring a few bottles to share at the end of the day at his house.

Occasionally we work for clients who also enjoy good beer, and occasionally they will bust out a few bottles in the middle of the afternoon. We always partake, but one is the limit if work isn't done, and it's never a heavy hitter. This doesn't happen often, and we would NEVER bring beer to a job site.

In our line of work it is simply not safe to be buzzed/intoxicated on the job, and I doubt our clients would appreciate it.

That being said, if I worked in an office that had taps in the break room or a fridge full of beer, I would be a happy man. That's just awesome. :grinning:

Beer to me equals relaxation, so it definitely wouldn't be effective for me on the job. When I'm having a tasty beer I like to kick back, not bear down.

That's tough. I bet when you get back they taste better than ever though.

I haven't drank at work but just doing chores around the house (whether physical or mental ones, like balancing checkbook etc), a beer or 2 quiets the mind and keeps you focused on the task at hand. Too much coffee, and the mind races and sends you bouncing from one task to the next without seeing something through as you feel there is something else more important/higher priority than the task you are currently working on. You may not be as mentally sharp after a few beers but definitely more focused.

Everywhere I've worked it's been a strict, "Not on company time" rule. (and lunch counts as company time.)
I could see once a week or so, crack a couple at the last hour or half hour on a Friday or something.
THen there was a kid I once worked with for a couple days who thought that fishbowling his car on lunch was a good idea. I don't think he lasted 10 minutes after coming back.

Funny, as a design student, I see that a beer can unwind me enough to where I can have a few breakthroughs for creative projects, but that isn't all the time, of course
