I used to work at a certain liquor store in Madison where we would get to drink on the job. I definitely was in better spirits (no pun intended) while working there than I would've been working for minimum wage anywhere else. I don't support getting drunk on the job, but having a few beers (dependent on ABV) had definitely helped me through many a college course. After the first few I think you start to see diminishing returns in both creativity and productivity however.

The last place I worked at had a Tiki bar in the main building that usually served margaritas around 3 or so on Fridays, and was used for special occasions. They also had tons of beer and some wine in all of the fridges. Mostly Costco cases, like Sam Adams or Sierra Nevada. I would have a beer with lunch occasionally.

Where I work now (only for a month and a half) we have beer whenever there's an office provided lunch for a special occasion.

It's pretty common at Silicon Valley start ups, as far as I can tell.

One time I brought a playstation, laptop, and beers to work... that was a good night.

At my Big Box Retail gig, they frown on such things; we are limited to water and gatorade. Graphic design? Occasional necessity.

I've lived in enough places (including Mad-Town for elementary school and again in college) to know that if it's going to happen somewhere, it's going to happen and succeed in Madison.

How I love and will forever miss thee.

My job sometimes requires me to buy alcohol for clients and potential business partners at lunch, and I can feel free to participate. That said I can't get sloppy.

When I was student teaching a few years ago my coordinating teacher's wife worked at one of those types of companies. Fridge was stocked with beer, wine and liquor all the time, and people would partake throughout the day. I honestly don't have any issue with it in a private business with no kids around. Everyone moderated and things got accomplished. However, teaching kids, doing a police detail, litigating in court, personal training, working on cars or fighting a fire is another story...

Isn't that what session beers were made for? The great flavor of a craft beer, but lower in ABV - seems tailored for work time. But, heck, I'm retired so when I "work" there's most always a beer close at hand!

France and other European countries always do the liquid lunch. America is lame and ass backwards. This country is so behind the times

I used to work at Tabcorp head office (an ex-government gambling entertainment company in Australia). They used to have drinks after 4pm each Friday, and it was such a great way of getting people from different divisions to really get to know each other and socialise. That in turn helps at work with productivity and particularly with inter-departmental communication and congruity. In my experience it really works.

Well, that's not exactly what I was trying to say, but I wouldn't fault you for testing your hypothesis.

Is that productivity in a field of work where creativity is required or at least rewarded?
I work in an office environment where the people that work with and/or under me do a lot of computer data entry/outreach to clients & no way would a couple drinks enhance anything at all.
On the other hand, would make some conderence calls mighty interesting...

I operate heavy equipment on a logging crew, so obviously, no. If the boss isn't around we might sneak off to a titty bar if we're in the vicinity. A few AALs and good strip club wings never hurt anyone. Of course the rest of my crew won't touch anything not BMC.

Edit: This has only happened twice in 15 years.

A few years back me and a buddy went for lunch, even though we were not drinking we sat at the bar as usual. There was a new tap and I asked what it was. The bartender asked if we wanted to try it. He gave us a taste in a shot glass. We clinked glasses like we were doing shot, at that exact moment a bunch of Sr. Managers walked in, luckily w had a good relationship with a few of them and we were able to explain what they just saw.

Im a plumber. Ill occasionally drink on the job during the summer if I'm working outside all day. Really depends on who Im working for at the time. Most of the backwoods redneck folk around here don't mind at all.

    I don't drink any beer < 8% ABV (usually 10%+)

So a few of those in the morning or afternoon would often make a nap wayyyyy to tempting.
