Only if i have to: parades, festivals, beach, etc. I pour all beers into a glass no matter if its from a growler, can or bottle.

I think that's why I prefer cans over bottles. Cans seem to have a nostalgia feeling associated with it.

Use a glass....unless you like sucking metal taste etc. from a can

With all the various glassware out there, why is this still even a topic?

I drink from a can the same way I drink from a bottle. I open it (can or battle) and pour it into a glass. A big part of my enjoyment is how the beer looks and cans and brown bottles don't help with that. Of course there are clear glass bottles but I leave those at the store - not a fan of the skunk.

If it's a beer I've never had, I always pour. If I have had the beer a million times, I don't care if it's out of the can. I pretty much always pour bottles for some reason though.

    Quite often

If you are like me, out of habit. I never poured a Busch Light, Miller Lite, Coors Lite, PBR, High Life, or Bud into a glass. We have all been conditioned to. Kind of like drinking and eating so many things cold

I drink from the can regularly and have never noticed a metal taste and I have done side by side with a glass

If you somehow manage not to swallow the wasp, drinking beer from a can (or bottle) insults the beer, assuming its a quality craft brew.

The ‘instructions’ on the Heady Topper can: “DRINK FROM THE CAN! DRINK FROM THE CAN! DRINK FROM THE CAN!’’

John Kimmich explains: “Why do I recommend you drink from the can? Quite simply, to ensure a delightful, hop experience. The act of pouring it in a glass smells nice, but it releases the essential hop aromas that we have worked so hard to retain.’’

I am not aware of any other commercial brewery Presidents/Headbrewers who also make the same recommendations as John Kimmich but it seems to me that the same rationale is applicable.

    Cheers!

I like Oettinger hefeweizen straight from the can while tossing some steaks to the barbecue. It´s great.

I can't smell all that wonderful hop aroma they worked so hard to retain when it's buried in a can with a small hole to stick my nose in.

I have drank Heady Topper from the can. You can indeed perceive the hop aroma directly from the can.

I have also drank Heady Topper from a glass. I enjoyed that as well but there was indeed a difference in hop flavor/aroma from the two different drinking experiences.

John Kimmich does know what he is talking about here.

With that being said shouldn't all IPAs be drank from a can or bottle then? I have drank heady topper from both can and glass but I personally preferred a glass and felt that I got more aroma from the glass. Yes, I still got a lot of aroma from the can as well.

From a glass > from the can. Personal opinion here, of course. But I agree with the previous post; why is Heady the only IPA (or any craft beer that I've seen, for that matter) that implores us to drink straight from the can? What makes it so different?

    As I have already posted:

"I am not aware of any other commercial brewery Presidents/Headbrewers who also make the same recommendations as John Kimmich but it seems to me that the same rationale is applicable."

It appears to me that you have a personal preference drinking IPAs from a glass. I would recommend that you follow your personal preferences.

I homebrew a lot of IPAs and I always pour those bottles beers into my Spiegelau IPA glasses and I enjoy drinking those beers that way.

If I ever get the chance I would liked to conduct a side-by-side tasting of Heady Topper with one being from the can and the other from my Spiegelau IPA glass. The type of glass used can impact the sensory experience.

    Cheers!

Yeah totally. Not saying a heady from the can isn't great, but BS if it only applies to Heady because Kimmich said so.

If I was Shaun Hill I would announce that HF are soon going to be releasing a 2in x 2in x 1in Saison Suppository, because that's the "only" way to consume a HF saison.

Yes, that is correct I do personally prefer my IPAs and all other beers in a glass more than a bottle or can. I didn't see your comment "seems to me that the same rationale is applicable". The point of my posts and particularly directed at you because I respect your opinion and wondered if John's comments about the losing aroma is accurate or is it a personal preference or marketing. I find it interesting that no other brewery shares that opinion.

Also, I never hear people say you should drink from a bottle just a can. The concept should be the same regarding hop aroma lose.

    Anyways cheers!

“…wondered if John's comments about the losing aroma is accurate or is it a personal preference or marketing.”

There is indeed science involved here. An empty glass is not truly empty; it is full of air (20% of which is oxygen). As you pour your beer into the glass the beer becomes oxygenated. As a homebrewer you are well aware that after pitching your yeast you should avoid air (oxygen) contacting (mixing in) with your beer. The IPA in your glass will begin going through oxidation processes which will impact hop aroma and also some hop flavor as well. By drinking from a can you avoid this ‘mixing with air’ process and thereby avoid the oxidation processes that occur in the poured beer.

Is having poured beer getting oxidized a big deal? If you ‘gulp down’ the beer in a few (e.g., 5) minutes, my opinion is that it is not a big deal. If you drink your beer over a period of time (e.g., 15 minutes) then it is indeed a deal; whether it is a big deal is a matter of personal preference.

“I find it interesting that no other brewery shares that opinion.” Well, I am simply not aware whether another brewery shares that opinion; it is simply a matter of me not knowing. I personally do not have regular interactions with all of the craft brewers out there. Considering that there is presently over 3,000 craft breweries/brewpubs I will never get a chance to meet all of those brewers.

    Cheers!

My personal take...almost always out of a glass. For instance, I find that drinking an IPA out of a can just turns up the volume on the bitterness. Most of the grapefruit, or tropical fruit notes, are related to smell more so than taste. On the other hand, bitterness is tasted rather than smelled. So I find that drinking a canned, hoppy beer just leads to an imbalanced flavor. Just my take...certainly not gospel. That said, I'll be in the stands at the Indy 500 this weekend, drinking beer from cans and loving it.

On the other hand, I don't get much on the nose from a Gose, so a canned Gose is a lesser difference for me.
