Avery IPA out of the can on the golf course works for me every time.

That being said, I never prefer beer out of a bottle/can. I love the smell of IPAs way too much.

“This could also be that everyone has it in their head that it tastes "better" directly from the can. Your mind is a powerful thing.”

There is no doubt that a mind is a powerful thing. My mind is ‘wired’ to think that beer can only really be appreciated by pouring it into a glass (a proper glass for the style no less). I was shocked that I actually preferred Heady Topper from the can vs. a glass. That is counter-intuitive to everything that I learned or experienced.

As regards the “floaties”: if ‘stuff’ is suspended in beer then you will be drinking that “stuff” either way: can or bottle.

    Cheers!

I prefer to always pour into a glass with both beer from a bottle or can obviously. But sometimes it's really convenient to just have out of the container it comes in (pretty sure that's why they come in 12oz to begin with), and I don't want to drink a macro lager to have it out of the container.

I'll drink a Troegs Troegenator any day out of the bottle and still enjoy it very much, something really nice or something I've never tried before I'll always pour. But I don't think it is a crime to drink right from the bottle as some seem to indicate. Bottles > Cans if drinking straight from it in my opinion...But when pouring...it definitely doesn't matter to me!

Pouring a 19.2oz "stovepipe" of Dale's into a glass should be illegal. The only way to drink that thing is from the can!

Your lips and possibly tongue are touching aluminum so you will taste the metal even if there's no metal taste in the beer which as much as I hate cans I'll admit metal flavor is very unlikely to be in the beer BPA (which many people think is flavorless) however which is used to line cans and protect beer from the aluminum because it does have a taste will. Spoons and forks aren't a good example since they are made of stainless steel or silver both of which don't add taste if you want to do a test for your self try licking a shiny penny.

Also Dales was the "originator" off craft in a can, canning there first beer in 2002 ( I think). They came up with a process to coat the inside of the can so you do not get the metallic taste. My .02

Also I love CCB Jai Alai out of the can, on tap its ok and i cant drink it out of a bottle. I have no clue why!!! Cant wait for White Oak JA to be canned.

It's your perogative how you want to drink the beer, and in the case of HT it's their perogative to suggest to drink from the can.

The way I drink all my beers are I pour them. Besides opening up the aroma, I want to SEE them. I want all my senses in a drink experience to be engaged.

I look at drinking out of a bottle/can for any beverage as if going to a big rock concert blindfolded.

Why would I want to do that to myself if I have the option?

Cans are convenient, lighter, a bit more practical, but if I have a choice it gets poured. Always. Some circumstances dictate can only (such as at pool side with other public around), but can't think of many others.

Prior to drinking Heady Topper from a can I would agree 100% with everything you stated in your post.

If you could get your hands on a can of Heady Topper (or two cans) maybe a video of a side by side would be worthwhile?

    Cheers!

I agree with this completely, but I do want to mention that out senses are undeniably connected to one another. Focusing multiple senses on the tasting experience should intensify the overall experience to some degree, for better of for worse.

Our perception of what is "good," however, is mostly created out of experience (i.e. a movie is good because we compare it to any number of other "good" movies). This means I base the "goodness" of an ipa, for example, on the other ipas I drank throughout my entire life. Whether or not the beer is objectively better is a place for debate.

All that being said, some beer just tastes like shit. It's best not to look at shit if you are drinking it.

Hey I got a great idea!!!

Why don't breweries coat their cans with HOP RESIN!!! or sugar! I mean think about it, the possibilities are endless right? all the flavors!! You could get a lick of sticky malt on the can and then enhance your experience with each sip.

Coat the rim with dry yeast! Spices, the world is your oyster!! Woah

    think about it :grimacing: :confused::stuck_out_tongue:

(right now some young marketing rep at the big 3 who is desperate to get noticed, is writting this down all furiously...)

I almost always drink from a glass but on the rare occasion I drink from a bottle or can I enjoy the beer just as much, if not more so because it is a different experience from the norm. I don't believe in flavors opening up by pouring, or being activated by the bubbles from the etchings on the bottom. Yeah it sounds nice, or like something you would see in a late night infomercial, but those flavors are already in there and you are not going to cause any chemical changes by pouring or from carbonation. But I suppose if you believe it, you might perceive it as tasting better. I think a lot of the metal taste that is reported from cans is caused by dust on the cans. It loves to hang out around the rim where even if you can't see it you can taste it. Its not normal dust, its like an industrial dust from the trucks and forklifts and pallet jacks and what not. After unloading cases for hours your hands are covered in it. I don't think that many people wash off or even thoroughly wipe off cans before drinking from them. They should try it.

Like you said, OP, if you've had the beer a hundred times, so what? Sometimes I don't feel like dirtying a glass, sometimes I feel like I want a different experience, sometimes I'm just lazy. Pouring a beer into a glass will alter it slightly, IMO, so why not go for a different experience altogether?

I agree with you but I will say though that drinking out of a tulip or other specialty glass does increase the aromatic experience which is definitely related to taste, so I dont think its all just perceiving it better. And who doesnt love burying their nose in a tulip of ba darklord?

I enjoyed watching your review. You were very upfront that you have issues with aluminum. Despite that you did try and drink the beer from the can (which apparently was a traumatic experience for you). You gave it the old ‘college try’; good for you!

As I stated previously I was shocked that I preferred drinking Heady Topper from the can. As with many things related to beer, everybody has a different palate and differing experiences with a given beer.

Thanks again for sharing that video.

    Cheers!

It might not necessarily be from the can...Of all the 4 packs of ten tidy I've had at least 2 of them tasted metallic and should have been drain pours(poured in to tulip)..I can't think of another brewery I regularly drink where it has tasted metallic more then once.
