Sure no problem, glad you dug it.

I think everyone is different since some people don't have a can issue like I do. I grew up as a young kid with SEVERAL dentist trips for cavaties, and have so much almalgam in my mouth, I always wondered if that had a part of it for me experience. By the time I had the root canal at 12 I learned my lesson

Still metal is all to a familiar and unpleasant experience to myself taste and smell wise, and this was even true with soda cans as a kid.

As with beer, we have come along way, even with cans! Cheers again.

Hey... what if Cantillon or someones else's lambic got canned? Think about THAT! :sunglasses:

Well, from what I have read about Jean van Roy he seems to be a very interesting dude. I wouldn’t rule out that he would can his beer (if he got a canning line cheap).

    Cheers!

P.S. Even Jim Koch is canning Sam Adams beer. Who would have thunk that based upon all his statements that he would never can Sam Adams beer!?!

good point. i think the difference would come from the huge amounts of late hop additions that the alchemist does, which fade very quickly compared to earlier additions.

Have you ever considered it tastes worse in the glass BECAUSE you can smell more, and therefore taste more? And maybe it's.....*gasp*....an inferior beer?

Akin to a BMC needing to be ice cold, because if it warms up, you can detect more flavor. Which in this case isn't a good thing.

Heady Topper is by no means an inferior beer; it is an excellent beer.

    The ‘instructions’ on the can:

“DRINK FROM THE CAN! DRINK FROM THE CAN! DRINK FROM THE CAN!’’ Beneath it John Kimmich explains: “Why do I recommend you drink from the can? Quite simply, to ensure a delightful, hop experience. The act of pouring it in a glass smells nice, but it releases the essential hop aromas that we have worked so hard to retain.’’

My side by side taste test bears out that what is stated is correct.

    Cheers!

I should have clarified. I've also had Heady Topper, it's an amazing beer. Definitely not inferior, poor choice of words. I simply mean, perhaps pouring it into the glass allows one to pick up more flavors, which may not suit this particular beer (or hop forward beers in general).

You also cannot truly do an unbiased blind side-by-side between the glass and can, for obvious reasons.

“ …pouring it into the glass allows one to pick up more flavors, which may not suit this particular beer (or hop forward beers in general).” Well that statement is counter-intuitive to me. Prior to my Heady Topper experience I would have stated that pouring a hoppy beer into a glass would benefit a hoppy beer since it would permit the hoppy aroma/flavor to become more prominent.

    Cheers!

And I agree with you, I'm just trying to make sense out of something that defies what I know about tasting beer. I would love to hear about some glass and can side by sides with other hop forward imperial beers. Maybe Torpedo, and/or Deviant Dales?

Taste is 85% smell, that's why when you have a cold and your nose is stuffed you can't taste. Your nose is practically pressed up to the can, so it's normal that your getting a metallic taste.

Dude! I am right there with you. That is why I posted previously: “I suppose I could conduct an ‘experiment’ of Dale’s Pale Ale doing a side by side tasting. Has anybody conducted a Dale’s Pale Ale side by side tasting (can vs. glass)?”

    Cheers!

Yep, I read that post, and I think we're on the same page. I chose Deviant and Torpedo to pick canned IPAs with some more hop punch than Dale's.

This is a good excuse for me to revisit these beers, I might pick up some singles (beers, not chicks) this weekend and try it.

Always wash your can too before drinking. There are some serious nasties on there otherwise

Not necessarily... is the outside of the can (and lid) lined with plastic? That's where your mouth touches first before the beer enters.

I always pour Heady into a glass. I don't care what the can says!

The nose is the best part so why keep it trapped?
