I feel ridiculous asking this after living on Manhattan’s upper west side for only 32 years. But, I haven’t for a while and am spending the weekend in town. We’d like to get out and do some drinking if we can, preferably outside but since we’ll start (and finish) early maybe we’d grab a round inside an uncrowded spot. Where can we go for excellent beer on premises? I noticed when in the area recently that dive bar on 96th had covered outside seating, I know they have other locations, looks like As Is has outside seating (covered?) - seems like a rainy weekend on deck. Where are some good spots I’m missing and/or am fully ignorant of?

Bonus points if you can direct me to other half cans north of 42nd street (is this a thing right now)?

The Dive Bar locations all have solid to very good beer lists, though not sure how each of their outdoor seating setups are, and during normal times would usually be pretty busy.

Amsterdam Ale House on 76th and Amsterdam has an okay beer list and pretty good food.

Gebhard's Beer Culture is usually good, but I don't think they've reopened. George Keeley is in that same boat.

Not sure about the As Is setup, but that's more Hell's Kitchen than UWS.

And if you're considering As Is within the range, Clinton Gourmet and Bread & Honey both always have a handful of OH cans in stock these days.

I haven’t worked in Manhattan in 3 years now but I peruse the Clinton Gourmet beermenus page every now and then just for shits and giggles and it is stacked. I always enjoyed Beer Culture on 45th but in all honesty I’m pretty out of touch when it comes to that area.

Yeah, I love As Is, but would hardly call it UWS. Not sure what their outdoor seating’s like, but Harlem Hops was my favorite before leaving town almost a year ago. They almost always have OH cans, too.

UWS whole foods has infrequently had OH cans.

Clinton Gourmet is the best store ive ever been too. it was a block from my office, but we arent going back to the office anymore, remote forever. Ill go back just for the beer but coming from NJ the tolls and the like add to the purchase price.

The one time I was at Clinton, I was wearing a Kane hoodie and got into a conversation with the beer guy about them. He ended up telling me about Cantillon and 3F bottles that he keeps behind the counter, and I ended up buying a bottle of Rose de Gambrinus from him. Just a heads up if you're into Belgian lambic.

I still work in the city occasionally (tribeca), gotta make a few trips back up there! I always thought it was a great store but looking at their beer menus it looks better than ever now!

Be careful. You can spend a hundred bucks in that place very quickly. Like @Xerlic said, if the owner is there, he’s a great salesman who loves talking beer.

I had a similar experience a few years ago. I used to commute in from NJ and would pop into Clinton Gourmet frequently to pick up beers here and there. One time I started talking about lambic with the guy managing their inventory (prob the same beer guy). I popped in a few days later and he had pulled out a few 3F paper labels (geuze and kriek) for me to purchase. Really nice...

Dropped about 75 bucks in there and talked beer for at least 20 minutes. Most psyched about the 12oz bottle of BA behemoth I just opened up. Proprietor was (rightfully) most psyched about the assortment of district 96 cans he had. This has to be the best beer store in Manhattan at this point, right?
