Drinking Schwarzbiers

    Susquehanna Brewing Company makes a Black Lager of Pils Noir. It is not labeled as being a Schwartbier but I find it to be an enjoyable Black Lager to drink regardless.

    At their Beer Hall and Kitchen they have their Coffee Smoke and Dagger on nitro. And I almost always see it on nitro at bars around Boston now.

    I'm not saying this is or isn't preferred, but it seems to be a trend, and one that the brewery itself does as well.

    I get these styles mixed up as well. Especially confusing now because, looking at the style category on this site, one of the few Schwarzbiers I've had is Schell's Chimney Sweep - which is smokey. So it should probably be categorized as a Rauchbier.

    Look at the listings for Schlenkerla's beers and tell me how it's decided which is which.

    They really should all be categorized under the base beer they are (like the Eiche), with the smoked malt being an added accent.

    Such as, Chimney Sweep is a Rauch Schwarzbier.

    I stand corrected then.... Jack's Abbey supports this beer on nitro, which is a shame, IMHO, but I acknowledge there is part of the market that wants nitro pour beers.

    If you click on the link and look at the draft list, the coffee version is on nitro, but the regular appears to be a normal CO2 draft.

    I don't mind breweries offering this, some people love nitro. I've seen Old Rasputin, Hop Devil, Left Hand's Milk Stout obviously, and numerous craft dry Irish Stouts on nitro from breweries I respect.

    AlcahueteJ beat me to it, but I was going to say that beermenus shows four places currently pouring a nitro version of the beer (which exists as a separate beer entry).

    I was once asking a "local" brewer why he puts out certain beers as nitro and he said the demand from the bars is so high... which makes a lot of sense. In NYC, there are probably a ton of nitro taps waiting to be filled with something other than Guinness.

    Wouldn't there be carbonation issues if a bar put a standard keg on as nitro?

    I don't remember the technical details, but apparently so. At least one theme that emerged from a now deleted thread was that if you are getting a beer on nitro then thats the way it was prepped by the brewery and the bar has to have the right stuff to dispense nitro. (I'd originally thought all that was needed was any keg and the right bar equipment, but that turned out to be clearly wrong on my part.)

    What?! how are these 2 NOT getting with the trend of craft brewers litigating one another over the same name?? Where's the craft brew master's slap fest??:rolling_eyes: Haven't had the Westbrook but the Brew Kettle is a really nice non hoppy offering from the brewer, good good stuff

    Death and Taxes is great but only on tap in California. I prefer Bony Fingers, it's a similar beer made by the same brewer but it's a touch dryer than Death and Taxes...

    Moonlight can do some really good lager beers. Lager gets a bad rap because most American producers don't do a good job.

    I love black lagers but was letdown by Duck Rabbits' offering...they're one of my fave breweries...

    I do believe scwharzbier should not be interchanged with black lager as a style. In terms of style the schwarzbier should be more malt forward and sweet, while the black lager will be dryer.

    I don't mind nitro stouts either, I don't think they are necessary but don't mind them.

    The only reason I can see a rauch being nitro is because the comsumer base sees dark beer and automatically thinks Guinness. If I can find S&D in bottle I will absolutely give it another shot, JA makes some phenomenal beers.

    But for real a lagered beer served nitro was really not my thing. Maybe the coffee version makes more sense, but a heavy, dense bodied lager is like a heavy, dense bodied supermodel.
