At home, or where available, always out of a glass. However, after working a football game and "tailgating" with my friends, it is usually out of the proverbial "red solo cup"... can't take a chance of any of the glassware getting broken. :grinning:

I say whatever floats your boat. I have a buddy who only drinks cold Budweiser or warm natural ice. Neither one palatable by my standards, whether it's warm, cold, in a bottle, glass, or draft. But I'm glad he likes it. And he's a cheap drinking buddy. Drink what you want, how you want. Every beer is different, as well as people's tastes.

You can smell beer while it is in your mouth. Yes, aroma plays a huge role in our perception of flavor. That aroma is picked up while the beer is in the mouth and after swallowing. The pre-sip sniff doesn't change the perception of the flavor once sipped. Drinking a beer from the bottle *DOES* allow the drinker to get the aroma and therefore the full flavor of the beer.

I prefer my Heady Topper and Anti-Hero from the can, everything else into a glass and #ProperGlassware if possible

Funny you mention this; the first time I had a sixer of Celebration in the house (winter 2000/2001), I drank most of them straight from the bottle and have never really liked it as much since from glasses. Go figure.

Some important things going on here and yes, retronasal olfaction can and does make a contribution so there is some aroma and flavor. But the basic point remains that it is reduced without nasal input as well, i.e., there is little or no nasal olfaction.

So here's a suggestion if I may. Next time you drink one of your favorite beers from your regular glass try sipping the beer while pinching your nostrils closed for a while, then spend some time sipping the beer with the nostrils open.

Here's a link that explains things in much more detail and depth and without the over simplification that I introduced:

Last night, I visited a friend I hadn't seen in a while, and he gave me a bottle of Founders Porter that I had left there a month or two ago. I didn't want to sound like a snob so I didn't ask for a glass or anything and drank it straight from the bottle. It was almost like drinking a different beer. I was very surprised. And I am very familiar with Founders Porter, as I drink at least a 6 pack a week during the winter months. I am now completely sold on the idea of proper glassware being important, or at least a glass that you can get your nose in whilst taking a sip.

I nestled a pliny the elder 500 ml into my broncos coozey last night and downed it and it was very enjoyable and I always drink pliny from the bottle I like it more, but I like most IPA in 500ml or smaller bottles from the bottle or can, but when it comes to sours or stouts I always pour them in a glass go figure I will enjoy them the way I want haha

The only reasons to not drink from a glass is when one's not available or the only one available is filthy. And if there's some place to wash it, the filthy excuse is gone.

So this is where Rushing Duck in Chester, NY got the name idea from.

I do use glassware whenever practical. But after pouring all the beer into my glass I have a non-traditional step in my routine. I sniff the top of the opening while I watch the head settle.

I prefer the bottle for most styles, but use a glass for stouts and porters to let them warm up more easily.

Yeah, I hear ya. But technically, the correct term is "poor man's koozie." :grinning:

Actually I have, in past desperate times, actually had someone standing there with a gun, forcing me to drink out of the bottle directly, no glass. I was rightly terrified, on one hand, realizing I might get shot at any moment, on the other hand, fearing that a BA might spot me drinking directly from the bottle. It's a horrible situation to face, and you don't know how you'll react till you find yourself there. But the men with their guns were strangely humanitarian, providing poor man's koozies for every one of their captives, and regular restroom breaks. Secretly, I found the whole experience kinda exciting, fancying myself some sort of modern-day Indiana Jones, playing my captors for the pawns that they were. And when I finally led the successful escape effort, we all just kept right on drinking from the bottles, paper bags intact. By then it didn't seem to matter anymore. :grinning:

Usually glass for the look and smell, but when I want to really get the taste, straight from the bottle is better. A single sense works stronger on its own, and smell changes ones perception. I do this most often with IPAs, whose flavor gets masked by the smell far too often. Try some of your favorite IPAs out of the can or bottle -- I bet you'll be surprised at how little flavor some of them actually have. And THAT's why you drink Heady out of a can

Glass, bottle, can, growler, bowl, cup, whatever you have is good. I don't agree that a glass is the end all be all of beer drinking. I don't believe a glass is automatically the best way to enjoy a beer or the only 'right' way to do so. Each way is a different experience, all just fine in their own way.

I say, drink up! Don't matter how you get the beverage to your mouth!
