I had one Celebration left in the fridge, so I tried some out of the bottle before pouring the rest into a glass. The few sips out of the bottle were definitely more hoppy and I thought it was a bit sweeter that way. It was good both ways, but I found it to be more flavorful and more enjoyable out of the glass. If you like it better out of the bottle, then you should enjoy it the way you like it!

Not bottles, but I absolutely will not drink any canned beer out of anything but the can. Something about it just feels right, and with all the advances in liners from the surge in canning, canned beers are tasting damn fine lately as-is.

Lol. More power to someone if they choose to, but I wouldn't be going drinking with them! Their snacks probably consist of kibble and beggin' strips. Ha!

I get in the mood to drink out of the bottle sometimes, too. Hoppy stuff, <5%, and bitters probably more than any other styles; and in particular, Hop Stoopid and Enjoy By. Besides staying aromatic and carbonated longer, most seem to taste a little pinier from the bottle. Cheers!

The only time I ever drink straight from the can or bottle is when I'm at a party. I usually save the special stuff for other occasions where glassware doesn't seem as strange.

Maybe more gas would have escaped. I want to know about the small hot-boxed room. It's a big mystery!

I love this. All the same people who abide by the Alchemist's rules and post that Heady is better from a can are (for the most part) ones who'd never do the same with Toroedo, Gandhi Bot etc...

Agreed however. DRINK IT HOW YOU PREFER IT!! It's your beer. You paid for it.

I can remember a beer I had that I didn't particularly enjoy. It was a grapefruit ale and the smell, to me, was like that of vomit. Drinking it straight from the bottle made it so I didn't have to smell it much. It was the only way I could actually drink it.

Agree about celebration tasting better out of the bottle.

I tend to drink most of my beers out of my finest glassware, but some beers honestly just taste better of out of a can/bottle.

Jai Alai, to me, tastes so much better out of the can. It is almost an entirely different beer to me in a glass. I did have several (I mean, dozens) of pints of Jai Alai on tap while down in Sarasota, and it was honestly better when I got in a can.

I also feel that Jack's Abby Mass Rising is better out of the bottle. DC Brau The Citizen is also better out of the can.

This is why cans with 360 lids need to take off. It's essentially a portable pint glass!

Except they don't accomplish other major aspects of pouring beer into a glass - expelling excess CO2, opening up the aroma, and creating a collar of foam.

Also, for them to "take off", laws will have to change in many states. The 360 lid is illegal in many states due to anti-litter beverage container laws that date back to the "removal flip-top" era of the 1970s.

For my one and only HT I will try some out of the can to start and pour the rest in a glass. Thanks BAs - cheers!

BTW - I prefer to drink most beers poured into glassware . . . :grinning:

Thanks for the suggestion, but it is not needed. I have taken sensory analysis classes.

When you drink beer from a bottle, your nasal passage is open. I actually thought about making the same suggestion you did in my first post, as it serves to prove my point.

Of course drinking beer from a bottle will give a different experience than from a class. I love smelling beer from a glass. But when the beer is in your mouth (which is where it is when you are tasting it), you are not smelling it from the glass, you are smelling it inside your mouth.

The awkward moment when you're at someone's house and they hand you a bottle of beer without a glass....

A place I work ended up with three cases of glasses that were the wrong size and the glass company didn't want them back. I took them all home and gave them away to friends who didn't have any glassware. :grinning:

For sure, and I think we are pretty much in agreement that there is a set of aromas present and being smelled when the liquid is in the mouth. However, as you note, the experience is changed without the orthonasal component. That change results from the fact that retronasal smelling does not give the same experience as does orthonasal. There is a demonstrable difference between the two in their sensitivities to some odorants, with the retronasal system being inferior to the orthonasal in picking up certain components and having a higher threshold of sensitivity for some components of the full aroma than the orthonasal.

Oh, you mean the homebrew cleanse? It counterbalances potential weight gain. Depends on your perspective and availability the next day as to whether that is added to the "positive" or "negative" side effects.

I'm going to try your pouring experiment. It makes sense to me theoretically and I also enjoy beer most out of a glass. I will raise the issue with my tasters at tomorrow's beer tasting party. I give everyone a couple glasses and encourage them to rinse out whenever they need to.
