You are not looking at the right places if you are looking at 40 for regular loons :-)

I'm bringing a few saved beers to the beach next week, and will be my nighttime sippers. No whales bro stuff, but I'm not into that anyway, thru trial and error some of my highly sought after brews aren't as a good as what I traded away. Hot and currently popular don't always equal better, make that rarely better.

I'm addicted to collecting whales I've drank very few of them and my room is starting to pile up with beer. I get cold feet opening the wax tops. They just look so beautiful. I'm sick in the head

I don't have the time, resources, etc to go running around for whales. I would much rather find someone to trade some good stuff I get around here (fat heads, FFF, etc) for some heady/gandhi bot that I truly enjoy then hoarding a bunch of stouts that I will probably never drink. More power to the guys that make the big trips and stand in 5 hour lines for 4 oz pours of something. End of the day, give me a good crisp ipa whether local or from somewhere else and I am a happy man.

And where can I get these loons for less than 35-40 shipped?

Most the "whales" I get I make sure to get a couple. Enjoy them, and age one or 2 for a later date.

Belgium In A Box can be a useful tool if you get a couple people together on a buy, or buy bulk yourself. I'm sure you have heard of the site- one big thing to note is that bulk buys bring the price down substantially.

Example (Prices include shipping to my area so YMMV, distributed evenly across bottles to resolve a per bottle rate):
    1 Classic Gueze, ~$50/bottle
    4 Classic Gueze, ~$18/bottle
    9 Classic Gueze, ~$15/bottle
    14 Classic Gueze, ~13/bottle

    1) Yes

    2) Whenever I feel like it.

    3) No special occasion needed.

Case in point: I'm drinking Duck Duck Gooze right now, by myself, just because I wanted to try it. Would I rather share it with friends/family? Hell yes! I really mean it. However, if I wait around to find someone who'll drink it with me I'd never get to try these things. None of my craft beer drinking friends/family like sour beers. At various times I've consumed other difficult-to-find beers on my own (Prairie Bomb, Pirate Bomb, Parabola, BCBS,etc) when I felt the urge. Still prefer the company of other beer drinkers though...

The term whale is so subjective. KBS and BCBS are considered whales by some. CBS and Proprietor's are considered to be whales by others. Cable Car and DDG by another group of BA's. I think that oftentimes a whale is determined by your beer budget. I do not feel obligated to share my personal whales with others and have no problem sitting down by myself with a bottle or two of something special.

I hold onto my faves for a while simply because I like how the aging process mellows them, generally speaking. But truth be told, I normally wouldn't drink something I bought immediately just because... drinking beer is obviously the purpose of the exercise. But sometimes just knowing the beer is down there "being" is nice to know too. Timing is everything, and sometimes, that time is now, and sometimes its a special occasion. Of course, sometimes that special occasion is that its a nice evening and there's beer in the cellar.

Perhaps a stupid question... But what constitutes a whale for you folks out there? How rare/expensive etc... Does it need to be?

Are dark lord and darkness and the yearly releases whales?
Is pliny a whale to so,some on the east coast?
New Glarus since I have essentially no access short of trade?

Just asking so I have a better idea of the definition.

When I first was getting into craft beer, I was always looking for the hard to find rare stuff, cause everyone talked about it and it had really high ratings.....I was able to get a few and typically they didn't strike me as anything too amazing.

Why would I pay $15-$20 for a bomber of something limited and sought after when I can pick up a nice 6-pack of soooooo many great beers for $10 a pop?

I'm a novice compared to most on BA but I didn't realize that BCBS was considered so rare and a whale. I would have bought much more than the 1 I got at the local Whole Foods here in Indianapolis. They also had the BCBCS in abundance for more than a month. SMH Next year it's on!

I'm surprised a brewer hasn't just gone ahead & created a whale & called it Moby or Ahab, now there's an idea 1 brewer, 2 whales, 2 different styles...both equally amazing. Of course it would have to be brewery release only, limited quantities, reserve your ticket, only 2 tickets per household, only 2 bottles per ticket holder, oooh and a brewer in a cold weather climate that drops these in January so your loyal fans can suffer for the whale...
