Anyone ever see the movie, "Sideways?"

Not that I often take stock in the wisdom of movies. But one of the characters speaks some truth about when you should drink whales. Granted they are speaking about wine, but it applies.

"You know, the day you open a '61 Cheval Blanc... that's the special occasion."

And it is. If you are waiting for some special day, you may miss out. The day you open something you've waited on and anticipated becomes a special day.

Had no idea so many people considered things like KBS, BCBS, and any Cantillon to be whales. I've never really considered them as such, but knowing that so many do makes me feel better about myself. I just assumed I'd never tried a whale before!

Also, does Double Barrel Aged Huna count? I've always considered that one of my greater beer victories (though I haven't been at this hobby for very long).

And what about the Funky Buddha MBCP bottles from my avatar? They only bottled a few thousand and haven't bottled them again. Is that whaleworthy?

I gave up waiting for special occasions. In the end it's just beer. It's meant to be drank. Making a bigger deal out of a whale than it needs just makes your expectations too high.

Having a beer and not drinking it makes it a wasted beer.

I drink a great beer every Sunday. Sometimes it's the rarer stuff. Sometimes it's the more expensive stuff that can't be drank every day for various reasons, such as sucaba or a cascade sour. I also tend to bring a good bottle to gatherings where I know there will be some good beers drank. Many of my friends like beer a lot but aren't all that savvy (addicted).

I agree - travel gives you more opportunities to find and try great (and local) brews.

Omg. That son of a bitch. The only remotely whale-like beer I've ever had is BCBS. How can he waste that! That stuff is gold for us newbies (laugh all you want, big shots)!!

First I need to get a couple of whales, bray, den I drinks dem! If I gots two, dat is.

Otherwise, I'll just torture myself, debating whether to drink it or not.
