I don't like to drink them by myself. Always try to share with my other beer loving amigos. Makes it more likely they will return the favor.

I drink as I go. there are so many good beers that get released throughout the year that I find no point in holding on to anything for years. the most time I have cellared something was 12 months. also, I have tried so many beers that have been aged for 2,3,4 years and most are only marginally better, and sometimes worse than something fresh or 1 year old. drank a 2012 Parabola and it was excellent, while 2010 was not quite as good. Aging beers certainly changes them, but Im not convinced it makes them all that much better (there are exceptions of course. had a 2008 Ten FIdy which was freaking amazing, and 3-4 year Old Stock is also incredible)

I also dont have that collector gene where I get a hard on every time I look at my stash and I also dont trade (living in Portland definitely helps with not needing to trade)

And I'm not trying to come across like a dick; if you want to go after all the rare stuff, more power to you. It just kinda lost its luster after a few years.

This thread makes me want to bust out some more (mini) wales this weekend. To reply to this thread, the only thing I see as off limits to drink is my cantillons. So damn hard to get here in NC.

If I'm buying a whale, I try to buy two. One to drink soon, and one to drink later. I would buy more, but there's always that evil budget to worry about...

I try and share them with people who will appreciate them. I have no problem opening up a nice bottle..

I'm at the wonderful stage where I buy to try, whales included. But I've come to the realization (which I've put into practice) that if it's within my budget (and the store's bottle limit) I buy more than one: one for now, one for a more special occasion.

Mexican Cake comes with a drink fresh on the bottle, I like it fresh though anyway, not that's its a Whale, but some things even stouts drink best fresh, aging isn't always better.

don't even get me started on that haha. I don't want to pay 40 bucks a beer for mediocre loons. Maybe when the cantillon packs w/ fou foune become available again I'll take the plunge.

I don't think I have any "whales" in the sense of super-rare beer like Uli blends, Don Q, Loerik, etc..., but I do have a few bottles of very good stuff that took a lot of time, patience, and effort to acquire (i.e. driving 14 hours round trip to HF with 4 BAers in my tiny Ford Focus).

I try to save these for when good beer friends are over, for special occasions - it never feels right pounding an entire bottle on my own.

That said, I'm excited to finally get to open the bottle of Fou Foune I traded for last year sometime in the next 2 weeks when my son is born, and then later this summer/early fall, we're going to crack open my Flora B5 and Satsuma for a HF tasting.

Nah, I'm just a sarcastic asshole who dislikes the fact people call beer whales.

I'm anti Whale Hoarding. I like to drink whales but I do not favor the idea of these massive collections of rare beer. My biggest problem with with huge cellars is the fact what if you died tomorrow? Awesome shit you have that you never tasted. Although paradoxically I don't see the problem with paying a few extra dollars for a beer someone did age, as long as I didn't say oh man I never tried that beer because I'm waiting.
