Hey guys I am driving from chicago to the U.P. (marquette) on friday. i wondered if you had any suggestions along the way for must stops or places to grab a good bite and pint? thanks for the help.
we are taking 94 north to milwaukee, then 43 to green bay. just kinda hugging lake mich the whole time.
Pacino's Pub In Escanaba is pretty good and has a decent beer selection. Might be a good dinner stop on your way through. Although it is only an hour from your destination. Also be sure to grab some canned Blackrocks beer while you are in Marquette. The 51k IPA is phenomenal.
This is very true, but if you want to stop, make sure you have a reservation. The bar is first come first serve seating (and not much of it), but every time I've tried to stop in without a reservation they've been completely booked (not even waiting list) for the dining area. If you do stop there, just around the corner from Odd Duck is the Sugar Maple which has a ton of great beers on tap (I don't think their tap list online is up to date though…) Stubby's has some really good food and a great tap list too. And another awesome place is Rumpus Room in Milwaukee for great food and some awesome beers on tap. And there's always Lakefront Brewery and Milwaukee Brewing Company/Milwaukee Ale House as well. Really, there's a ton of great places in Milwaukee to stop.
In Marquette hit up the Ore Dock and fill your belly with some Saison Hiver, and they might still have a Java Stout on.
In Kenosha stop at Woodmans to stock up on New Glarus beers then hit Uncle Mike's, they have 86 taps running. I know they have Hopslam on tap as well as Black Husky Sproose Joose as well as Big Bad Baptist.
I would recommend stubbys in milwaukee, same concept as Uncle Mikes but better food (except for the lack of grass fed burgers) and less drafts, better drafts, and ones that actually rotate (52). That BBB has likely been the same one thats been on since their launch and when i tried it last time there was definitely something off with it.
Below is for Milwaukee Strictly beer bars Burnhearts Sugar Maple Von Trier (My Personal Favorite) For Food and Beer The Rumpus Room Cafe Hollandard (Not really a must stop but good quality of food and beer) Cafe Centraal (Not really a must stop but good quality of food and beer) If you can't make it to Milwaukee without getting hungry I suggest stopping at Erv's Mug in Oak Creek. If you get thirsty real fast there is Uncle Mike's Pub in Kenosha. If you make it past Milwaukee and are still thirsty there is Silver Creek Brewing in Cedarburg. I'll let some other Wisconsin BA'ers take over going north from here. Unlike some above posters, I cannot recommend Stubby's. They ripped me off and will never be going back there again. That and the bartender was very rude.
I agree with your list and thought of another great strictly beer bar: Roman's Pub. They get some awesome taps (according to their website, they have some BCBBW on tap right now…) and have some great beers cellared that occasionally come on. Sucks you had a bad experience at Stubby's.
Ya they update their tap list very often on their website. They also do growler fills, you don't need a brewery or Erv's specific one.
Not a fan of Stubby's. I hate how you have to be in the Stubby's club or whatever it is to order certain beers. Also have had very bad experience with their waitstaff. Went for brunch one morning and they didn't have any coffee mugs (the restaurant was empty) and they served hot coffee in a pint glass.
Umm...damn good food and pretty decent beer selection? I hate how people bitch about the Stub Club...it's only for one beer, Tap #53. I have gone there a dozen or more times, and have never had a problem with the service. We even stopped there on St. Paddy's Day last year and one of the guys I was with grabbed the bike off the wall and rode it around the bar and into someone's full size Jenga game. All the crew did there was laugh. Far from a fanboy, I still have a ton of love for Stubby's.
Just because some people have had bad experiences that does not mean others can't have a good time. I am one that did no have a good expirence, and I am simply going to vote with my wallet to never go back. I will also tell others not to go, but won't get on them if they do. Just want people to be informed.
Roman's Pub. Had Cherry Rye on tap when I was there a month ago. They keep their tap list up to date on the website so I'd look and see what they have first.
