I can't agree here, it's neither dry nor overtly bitter. Credited with being on the forefront of the opposite... NEIPA/juicy/haze. Also just about the best beer evah. Enjoyed mine today immensely. Stone Ruination (at least the original), Lagunitas Hop Stoopid, Sixpoint Resin, and I guess the commonly distributed/available Stone IPA (which I love, but ain't nothing on topic compared to the others) for something easy to find. Haven't had a palate-wrecking hop bomb that hurts the back of the throat in a long while.
Sixpoint Resin top of the list! Always looking out for “palate-wrecking hop bomb” — perfectly said! Thank you.
Not immediately helpful to the OP but earlier this evening I enjoyed drinking Hill Farmstead Double Citra and Pliny the Elder at a local craft beer bar (Capone’s). Sometimes a search is fruitful!?! Cheers!
Arrogant Bastard isn't exactly dry, but probably the bitterest, regularly available beer you can get nation-wide.
They don't make 'em anymore. Don't you know the west coast is dead!?! Actually every single one of my recommendations is likely not within your distro. North Park's Hop Fu is the beer you seek Cheers
Genius response — humor, truth (“They don’t make ‘em anymore”)? Warmly received. West coast style * feels * dead in the east, but must it die?! Thanks so much.
For instance, have had some truly exceptional outliers — and very interested in these — in the hazy world of NEIPAs from breweries such as Nightmare, Kane, Foam Brewers, and Veil — doubles and triples which on first pour look as though comprised of fruit and sweetness but which surprise and prevail with sharp, clean bitterness. High IBU and ABV are often rare coexisting attributes, clear or hazy in appearance. Thanks so much for the thoughtful responses.
For best East Coast options my list would include Sip of Sunshine, G-Bot, and maybe Maine Lunch for starters
@DavetotheB just posted a side-by-side tasting of Troegs Perpetual & Double Perpetual: https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...-side-by-side-2024.675648/page-8#post-8044737 A summary of Troegs Perpetual: "...the OG. Can’t beat that piney, bitter dryness." Cheers!
Ha! You beat me in posting the thing I wanted to post here! And finding fresh Perpetual in NY probably isn't the hardest thing in the world. Cheers!
I often see Heady Topper being described as the OG of the NEIPA. Personally, I think that description only equates to the look and mouthfeel. I find Heady to be dank and sharp with some malt flavors and while maybe not bitter, the assault of hops makes it taste bitter by the end. It's slightly gentler when poured into a glass, but I agree when i'm looking for a good hop assault reminiscent of a west coast IPAs of the past, it's one of my go-to's and I drink it from the can for maximum flavor.
