So I will be transferring my DIPA into my secondary tomorrow and was wondering if I can just throw my hops in there without using a bag of some sort, my hBS said just to do that. I use a wine theif to get my beer out the only thing I worried about is it getting clogged....any suggestions? Also do you want to keep as much of the yeast at the bottom of the primary out of your secondary is that what the idea is?? meaning you don't want to suck up any chunky stuff when transferring.
1. You can dry hop without a bag, but you may have some clogging issues when siphoning out. I use a big nylon bag for dryhopping that I can sanitize and pull out when done, with no problems. Really makes it easy. If you use a bag, you want something that has plenty of space for the hops to expand. 2. Yes, you want to avoid racking any sediment into secondary.
Most of the loose pellet hops will sink to the bottom anyway (sometimes a little will stay floating on top), so keeping the racking cane out of that will help keep it from clogging. My high-tech method involves a rubber band
