Im a newb so forgive my ignorance, I've only ever done 1 dry hop addition to a brew before, the recipe im using calls for a two stage dry hop of 8 days total.

My question is, do i add the first hops , wait the 4 days then throw the second hops in and leave the first ones for the remaining 4 days?

Or when i add the second batch of hops do i remove the first batch?

Definitely do not try to remove your first hop addition. Two stage dry hopping is meant to create a layered aroma, in this case the first hop is stronger than the other. Some people argue that this process is unnecessary, it's best to decide for yourself in this kind of situation. Here's a link to a discussion about dual dry hopping with some (I'm guessing) more researched experienced opinions than mine.

Dry hopping is not going to impact your flavor so really there's not much to worry about. Hope this helps some. Cheers!

Ps. Dry hop periods of more than 7 days are typically worthless the aromas are extracted on day one, your instructions call for an 8 day process that's only one day over. Won't hurt anything but you could probably cut down to six if you were in a rush. Again cheers!

Dry hopping actually does impart flavor. Removing the first set of hops makes sense if they limit the physical exposure of the second set of hops and they are bagged. The first set of bagged hops have already provided most of what they can after the first 4 days.

The one day dry hop theory has not produced good results in bags for me, but 3 days is very similar to 7 days.

Whenever I've done a two-stage dry-hop ... the first charge stayed in the fermentor after the second addition.
Hard to image the Pliny clone could be even more better if the first charge was removed.

My biggest concern was losing any flavor or aroma if I removed the first at 4 days, I think I'll give it a go with first half for 4 days in hop bag, remove then replace with second batch and see how it does.

Seems general consensus online is you've gotten about all you're going to get from dry hops at 3-5 days.

    Thanks for the info guys

I just did my first double dry hop on my last batch a few weeks ago. I dry hopped in primary and after 5 days transferred to a secondary through a paint strainer to not get the old hops into the secondary. Transferred straight onto a fresh batch of hops for another 5 days, worked out great.

When I do two additions I leave the first one in for the full length of time.
