I recently started dry hopping with whole hop leaves and I have been putting glass marbles in to weigh down the bags. But, each time the bag wind up floating like an iceberg, with a portion above the beer line. How much weigh in marbles do I need to have a one ounce of hop leaves sink below the surface? Any tips on any other ways to submerge whole hop leaves?

I now dry hop in keg and have had success at tying the hop bag about halfway down the dip tube. In the fermentor I have used spoons, glasses and marbles and yeah it takes a lot of weight. The exact weight I am not sure. Another that works well is stainless washers. I would like to hear other suggestions as well.

Similar to Seany, I add most of the dry hop to the keg.

Process If doing a large dry-hop addition:

    1. I remove hops from the mylar pouch(es) and put it in a gallon plastic "baggie".
    2. fluff hops in the plastic bag
    3. put hops in to a hop sac
    4. put heavy stainless steel fitting (usually a coupler) in hop sac
    5. put hop sac back in baggie
    6. suck air out of plastic baggie with straw
    7. Fill baggie with CO2 then purge
    8. repeat step 6 and 7 once then goto 9
    9. suspend hop bag in keg
    10. re-purge keg using CO2
It seems complicated, but it's not really - takes a couple minutes
